Tracking over the thumb
« on: January 31, 2011, 11:44:21 AM »
Over the last three weeks, I have been tracking over the thumb a good 1 inch to the right of the hole at times (right handed).  Typically, my first oil ring is about 1.5 inches from the thumb hole.  Without seeing a video, generally speaking, what would cause a change like this? Thanks.

I have this trouble when my timing gets off. If I start rotating my wrist before my thumb comes out then I will start tracking over the thumb.

Technically, your PAP has moved upward. This can be a timing issue, or a hand position/release thing - e .g. coming around the ball more than usual. This will be hard to find out, since I assume that your release feels "natural" or not wrong at all? A friend of mine had this problem when he started bowling without warming up. His track would move from 4" over +/-0 to 5" over and +/-0, also caused by a lapse of concentration.

Not sure - I'd check timing and focus on your hand position when you have this trouble.

Diz, I think you are correct except for coming around the ball.  If he did that, his track would drop and be tracking no where near the thumb.  Its in his release.

A good practice is to take a video of yourself when you are bowling good so you can compare it to one when you are bowling bad.

Depending on where you live,  your thumb might have changed due to the cold weather and you might have dry skin.  All these things could contribute to your release problems.  ie grabbing the ball, dropping the ball etc.

If the thumb stays in the ball too long through the rotation, it makes the track raise towards the thumb. If you think of the thumb at 12 o'clock and the fingers at 6 o'clock (relatively speaking) at the release point,  the thumb is closer to 9 o'clock at release with the fingers closer to 3-4 o'clock. It is close to if not a full roller release. When the track stays on the left side of the middle finger and starts to track over or on the inside of the thumb hole, it is considered a full roller.

Yes, that is what is driving me crazy because it feels natural out of my hand.  Is there any way I can put pressure/weight on a particular finger to remedy this?

This is hard to tell - a video of yours would be most helpful. A generic suggestion from me would be to concentzrate on a firm wrist until the ball actually left your finger tips, with the idea of "chasing" the ball from behind esp. with your ring finger tip. This should help, but I am not certain if there's another reason we haven't considered yet?

I've had this problem in the past. Sometimes for me, it can be how the ball is specifically drilled. If the pin isn't far enough from the center of grip, I'll clip a ring finger and thumb hole.

In my experience if I start to do it with all my equipment, my thumb is exiting too late.

Is this one particular ball you are having the problem with or more than one?

I tried a different ball today, and I was still tracking over the thumb.  It looks as though my timing may be the issue.  I am already in a slide way before the ball.  My timing (and track) seemed to improve when I moved back in the approach, but now I am a good 18 inches behind the foul line.  When I go back to my original spot on the approach, timing is off again.

I do this with a couple of balls in my arsenal but not all of them. It has to do with where the pin is relative to my PAP. The more tilt I put into a shot, the less it happens, though.
