Title: General Selling question - double box
Post by: Effybowler on February 02, 2014, 12:41:09 PM
Hi,

I've done some purchasing of bowling balls from both here and ebay, and they have almost always come double boxed. But the outer box is usually not a bowling specific box, and seems to be a hair bigger than a regular bowling ball box, allowing the regular box to slip inside easily, but snugly. Where do you get these boxes? I'm looking to start selling some used equipment, but most of my boxes are a bit beat up from multiple apartment moves...

I always save them when I get a ball shipped to me or go see your pro shop guy and he can save you some.  Always good to have a few single ball and a double plus a 4 ball case.  I also save the original box when a buyer buys from me they get the original box and always double boxed along with tracking number and I have never had any issues.  Reason you want the original box is to see what the original specs were.  No issues with mid-weights or telling the buying public this is an x weight ball when it wasn't to start with right on the original box.  I had an a$$ over at BBE sell me a mid-weight that was supposed to be 14 lbs but turned out after being plugged and weighed it was 14lb 15 oz.  Of course he wouldn't ship in original box and said it was a regular 14.  BS!  He got negative feedback.   ;)

I am not purchasing or selling much these days my ho'ing days or pretty much over.

If I recall correctly... due to the diameter of a bowling ball being approximately 8.5", most bowling ball boxes slip almost perfectly into a 9"x9"x9" standard corrugated cardboard box.

I agree with both. I save the original outer shipped box and the original and always shipped double boxed.

Outer boxes are always 9" x9' x9" unless the shipper used an usual size. Uline has them if you need to buy some;they are among the cheapest I have seen unless you buy in huge quantities as a commercial buyer:

Jeff... one exception we've both  left out is the old Legends/Lanemaster ball boxes... Their boxes were larger for a period of time because of the accessories they felt the need to include with every ball...

I now return you to your previously scheduled thread topic at hand...

I had thought of those; I still have a few, but they are so rare these days, I decided not to complicate the issue. FYI They're 10"x 10" x 10". The 2 ball boxes for these are even odder sized; I think I still have one somewhere(10" x 10" x 19"?).

*nod*  I think we both eluded to their existence without specifically calling them out.  I shipped 2 L/LM balls to Italy and did not utilize their standard box because I could not quickly find the appropriate box to hold both.

I did include as much of the box as I felt needed to convey the ball specs, etc...

Thanks for the replies guys, I never thought to measure the outside of a standard ball-box to see that it was just shy of 9x9x9. Most of mine I didnt have an outer box for, because they came as part of mass orders through school. I'll have to take a peek for some shipping supplies somewhere and grab some.
