Going back to the brace :-(
« on: June 09, 2009, 01:40:43 AM »
After two years bowling without a brace, I decided that I have to start using one again.

I haven't been doing a very good job keeping my wrist from breaking, and the harder I try the more my tendonitis flares up.

During last night's practice I used a Columbia glove with a metal brace in the back and I was able to stay behind and under the ball much better.  An overall much higher rev rate and a very strong move off my breakpoint.  I'm betting that if I use the brace during my Thursday PBA Experience league I'll do a heck of a lot better than the first week (averaged 177).

I don't like losing the versatility that bowling without a brace provides, but I just have to face facts that age is starting to limit my ability to do whatever I want.

Bummer.

Don't worry. I put my Mongoose Equalizer on every time I start getting sloppy. I've got strong wrists, too. Think of it as something to help you repeat shots.

I'm not a fan of crutches, but if it is required for health reasons AND you are better with it than without it, strap it on and go do your thing!

With the proper product, you may not lose much versatility.  I had wrist issues after broken wrist for a long time and the Pro Release kept me right in the game until I was strong enough to go without one.

Lefty: Don't beat yourself up for deciding to wear a brace. They have their place for a number of different reasons.

In my case, after multiple hand/wrist surgeries and cronic medial epicondylitis (elbow tendonitis) I didn't have a lot of choice. What I found after experimenting with many of the braces available is that they're not all created equal. Some are very restrictive, while others hardly do anything at all. There is no set answer on which brace is the best. You have to do your own assessment.

You seem happy with the Columbia brace, but here are some more thoughts if you're interested. The Mongoose Equalizer that notclay referenced is a very good benchmark brace to start with. It's not too restrictive, but does provide some support. If you need something more in the Equalizer category, take a look at the Storm Xtra-Roll. It's my current favorite in the softer brace category. Mike Scroggins uses it on Tour, and since it's PBA approved, you'll see them used by Regional players. If you ever consider moving to one of the hard 'Robo' braces, take a look at the Storm Gadget. Where is differs from the other hard braces is that it allows your wrist to cup forward.

Good luck with whatever direction you take.

+1 for the Gadget. Once you get used to it on your wrist, you really don't feel it at all. It helps me keep my hand relaxed and get out of my thumbhole cleaner/faster.

No, you may not handle my balls.
No, you may not handle my balls. Well....maybe just for a little while.

I started going back to the metal brace and bought a Robby Revs II a few weeks ago after having problems with my wrist this year. It has helped stabalized it and I'm able to relax it aliite bit more than before with a regular wrist support. Don't let that discourage you in any way and just do what you have been doing before and you'll be alright.
