Help me! I'm becoming a stroker
« on: September 12, 2003, 03:05:44 AM »
I am becoming more of a stroker these days. still a litte more revs than a pure stroker but not a tweener.

what works best for strokers as far as:

core type, symmetrical or asymmetrical

rg. high or low?

pin placements? 4", 5", 3-3/8"

is axis leverage good for a stroker?

stance for a stroker. is it open or closed?

do strokers normally play up the boards?

A game hand postion?

I'm finding my way, but any advice from strokers or coaches out there would be great.

TIA

OmegaBowler,

I will try to help you as much as possible.  As I former stroker I will give you some info.  These are all typical answers and you must understand there are exceptions:

closed stance to keep your shoulders square to the arrows.

i throw the ball fairly fast-so earlier rolling drills worked for me, if you are slower speed you may want to consider later rolling drills.

high rg is balls made for length, low rg is earlier reving.

as for symmetrical or asymmetrical, experiment if you can and find what works for you.

strokers typically have the advantage during marathon style tournaments, b/c it is easier to adjust and line up pair to pair.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

FWIW, I'm just beginning to really start to get some more revs on the ball. Here are the 3 things I need to keep ever present in my mind when I realize I'm not getting the revs I want.

1) Bend my knee. I've always had trouble with my knee bend because I'm a big guy & it can begin to hurt if I bend too deep, but that makes me gunshy from bending enough. Without that knee bend I've got zero leverage & timing can be thrown off.

2) Be mindful of when & how much i'm turning the ball. If I suspect I'm coming over the top or turning at an improper time, I will throw one coming almost up the back of the ball to "reset" myself. Then I will adjust accordingly.

3) Most importantly: DON'T GRIP THE BALL. My #1 nemesis. I always have had trouble gripping onto the ball. This is one of the biggest killers of revs around. Since I recently went to a smaller thumbhole & started using a bit of slide-rite to get out sooner, I've found I don't grip nearly as much.

Good luck & I hope I was able to give you a few things to watch for.

I just went to sharp bevels. You can't grip it to tight or you will know it!
