Title: Grip Problems
Post by: tank38 on March 31, 2012, 10:47:55 AM
I've been having some issues lately with my thumb hanging up in the ball. It keeps grabbing at the inside part of the thumb and because of this my release is really inconsistant. I'm guessing maybe the span on my ball may be a little to wide or could something else be causing this?

One of the things that could be wrong is the size of the thumbhole being too big which causes you to squeeze and therefore making it seem like you are hanging up.

Get a certified coach to watch you bowl.  Pitch...thumb hole size...oval vs round....span can't be measured on a forum and there could be a ton of things(including something you could be doing) to cause it.

as stated above..you must seek the help of a professional
could be many things, fit, grip pressure, pitch, bevel
Your pro shop should be able to assist if they can see you throw a few

The key word is PRO shop.  I suggest finding a qualified IBPSIA technician.  Some shops are IBPSIA shops but still do not have trained professionals operating in them.  Many people ASSUME that the guy running the pro shop knows what he is doing.  If you look for a coach to help you make sure they are a trained IBPSIA technician also.  USBC has a class for basic ball fitting BASIC.  Sometimes it is hard to find the right driller for you.  After years of have a hamburger thumb and bleeding every night I bit the bullet and went to school to drill my own.  Worth every dime.

While I'll add to the Pro SHop/coach queue, I wonder if you don't need either a slightly  smaller span or a slight amount of bevel in the thumb hole: inside the thumb or at the release edge.

Charlest,

This seems like it might be the problem for me, my thumb seems to want to hang up at the very top of the thumb hole. My guess (and it's just a guess) is that it would be either my span is wrong or I just need some tweaking with the thumb pitch.

I live in the southwest area of Pa, does anybody have any info on a good pro shop or bowling coach?
