Are Cracks Okay?
« on: January 13, 2006, 06:52:54 AM »
I'm considering a ball, but it looks like it may have a cracked pin as well as a crack from or starting to encircle a finger hole. How would a cracked pin affect the balls performance? Can cracks be repaired?

Look for me in the upcoming PBA Tour! I'll be the guy in the back row with the foam finger singing "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" during the 7th inning.

Cracks are not a good thing.  They can be repaired, in some cases, by drilling it out and plugging the hole.  That's usually what is done when the bridge starts to crack.  If the crack is fairly close to the fingers to where it's easy to drill it out without putting gianormous holes, you should be able to get it fixed.

Is this a newer ball or fairly old?  If it does have some signs of cracking, you probably don't want to plop down a big wad of cash.  If it's new enough, it may still be under warranty and you could get it replaced outright (or the current owner could do so before selling it to you).

I still use a couple balls that have been cracked for years. My old Triton Heat, Purple Quake, and Wildcat are all cracked. Now, these are just small hairline cracks. No gaping holes. Super glue and willpower hold my Wildcat together, but it still hits a ton.
