Serious Problem with bowlers
« on: December 10, 2006, 11:21:49 PM »
Hey all,
I have a friend i bowl in a mixed league with that i always thought had a great amount of bowling talent and he just never let himself show it. Well this year he has found a way to not stop himself from bowling well and in the last four weeks has throw 3 700's and 1 690. Saturday night i tell him how i always new he was this good and to not get in his way and keep it up. He then tells me he is thinking of when to start throwing off cause he doesnt like being up 25 pins in average, i find this very disturbing. Last year we had another person in the league in the same boat do that also. I told my freind be proud of your average and dont lower it on purpose. Maybe i have to much personal pride or i was tought to do my best but that disturbs me. Am i the one that is wrong?  Do you think i could convince him not to do this? I am very confused.

I hear this from just about 90% of our association.  That's fine though because usually the guys that say this squeeze for the cheese everytime and couldn't throw a clutch double in the tenth if their firstborn's life depended on it.  I think it's a copout to mask someone's inability.

I feel the same way! why slack off and lower you average. Strive to do your best all the time. There are a lot of people that do that so they can make some money in tournaments. I beleive it is not right and far from classy.

In my opionion he may be a talented bowler but is far from being a top level bowler. I would rather bowl with or against someone who is going to give 100% all the time.

The only time I have ever laid off was in a tournament in juniors when I was using it as a warm up for nationals and a friend of mine needed the points from the tourny to make the championship. There was only like a $50 scholarship on the line. If I would have beat him he wouldn't have gone to the Championship. I still kept it close to make him earn it I just missed a 10 pin in the 10th to lose by 3 or 4.

We have a house here that has a doubles tourny the first week of every month. I asked a friend of mine to bowl it with me, he had bowled this about every month for the last 2 years. Well he said he was not going to bowl there anymore because they now made him use his last years book average which was 12 pins higher than the year before so he doesn't get the 30+ pins handicap he had been getting.
