1-1/4"

But this also needs to include any bevel that you migh put on the hole so I wouldn't go above a 1-1/8" hole.

1 1/4".  Page 3 of the Ball Specs manual says "One hole for balance purposes not to exceed 1 1/4 in diameter, including the surface opening".

So what you are saying is that any part of the hole is larger than 1 1/4" the ball is deemed illegal?  This came up on one of my leagues this week.  It was my claim that if you took a 1 1/4" slug and could stick it in the weight hoel the hole was illegal.  Am I correct?

If the 1 1/4" slug slips in easily, definitely too big.  If it definitely don't fit, it'sok.  If it's a chore to get it in, it's hard to say.  When you're right at the line, the tolerance in the size of the slugs could come into play.  As Goof said, keep it closer to 1 1/8" and know for sure.

The 1 1/4" slug would be a good poor-man's test.

Thanks for the help the problem I had is the slug would go in about a 1/4" and would stop.  It was not my ball.  they went ahead and let the guy use the ball the rest of the night.  This is a fairly new ball for the guy who carries a 180 average and the last 2 weeks (since he got the ball) he has shot over 700.  I was bowling against him and noticed the size of the weight hole.  I was having problems with my equipment going heavy all night and his would just sit there and not over react that is what made me look at the ball to see what he was throwing when I noticed a very large weight hole. The other reason I made a small deal about it was this was the same team that last year accused me of throwing illegal equipment (same equipment I throw at nationals) and wanted all of my stuff checked.  When it all passed at the proshop by the pro they still thought it was illegal.  I told them to learn the rules of the game.

i always thought the rule in league play was that you can not just weigh one persons ball,  you must check the whole league.

Why would that be?  Never heard of a rule like that.

So far as I know, there aren't any rules about if and when balls are weighed.  Not even after an honor score anymore.

according to a rules official at the usbc.
any ball question can be weighed to make sure its legal.
and only a ball questioned has to be weighed.
