Vise Thumb-It Installation - Movent Help.
« on: September 25, 2016, 03:56:06 PM »
Hi All,

Looking for a little help here.  When installing Vise Thumb-Its, about 25% of mine have a little bit of movement in them.  It seems almost as if the grey piece of the Ball-It isn't seated properly (although I tap them down before putting in the expander).

The ball in the short clip below is my second attempt on this ball.  First regular installation moved.. per Vise instructions, I drilled it out with a 3/8" bit, put ball plug in the bottom of the hole (to the appropriate depth) and installed a new Ball-It.  This one also moved.  It's becoming an exceedingly expensive system when I'm having to drill, plug, and replace a quarter of the thumbs!

I drilled three balls for myself at the beginning of the season.  Two are perfect, this one has fought me the entire way.  Currently plugging the thumb going on my 3rd attempt.  Maybe 3rd time is a charm?

Any tips or things to watch out for during installation would be appreciated.  To my knowledge, I'm following Vuse installation instructions to the tee...

Thanks
Scott

That's kind of bizarre. I'm actually confused trying to figure out how it would move up and down if its glued to the ball. The only thing I can think is that the 1/2" hole may not be deep enough and so the gray piece actually cant seat all the way down on the white nylon piece so the nylon piece has play in it, but again, if it's glued then im not sure how it would even be able to move. I know on my drill press, it hits the stop about 1/4" before I can reach the desired depth for the 1/2" hole, so I have to drop the bit down in the chuck a little bit to get to proper depth.

I will say, in my experience, the white nylon piece is so shiny and smooth it does not bond with the glue very well and it can separate clean from the glue, so I could see if there was some room for slop it could pop loose and have play like that. I sand all my white pieces with 120 grit sandpaper prior to installation and it seems to bond with the glue much much better. I had a few balls where the IT came clean out, all the glue was still in the ball, and the nylon piece came clean out. Since I started sanding, have had zero failures (knock on wood).

This is basically how I do it as well.

Thanks.  I'll make sure I double check the 1/2" hole depth and rough up the surface a bit.  I had been loosening up the bit in the Chuck to drop it down that extra 1/4" as well.  It could be that I'm on the very edge of having the right depth and sometimes I'm just over and sometimes just under.

Thanks
