Title: Has been discussed before, but I wanna see again
Post by: TheBowlingKid25 on October 17, 2004, 10:49:54 AM
How many people on here throw 14#? I am really thinking about going back to 14# again, not sure yet. I know for a fact that the carry is just as good, on good shots, but not quite as good on light shots. I can rev it up more then I do with 15#, and truthfully, I can admit Im a flinger, and dont have a WHOLE lot of accuracy, so more revs is better. I know, I know, just practice to be more accurate. Well, I will....later. Anyways, I think if I go back to 14# I can rev it up more, get better carry, and not wear myself out so much!! I realized Im getting totally pooped after like 5 games for PJBT's and such, and thats not cool. So what are your opinions, yes or no? Should I go back down, and sell what I have? Im probably going to get the 14# ball I have redrilled just to see, but I want everyones opinion. Thanks!

Well BK, you get so tired cause your whole armswing is forced.  People who go to 14 do so due to not enough deflection, and quite frankly, you don't have enough revs that it is a problem.  But hey, go ahead.  I get first dibs on the 15# stuff though!

Its not a matter of revs (thats an added bonus though) its just that I find myself getting tired, and I think 14# may be the answer.

I switched from 15# to 14# when I got my phase (though didn't have much of a choice), and have been there ever since. I am able to throw the ball much faster and rev it up more, which hads significantly raised my ability to score well on most conditions. The reason I swithced is becuase I could not get the ball going fast and could not get as many RMPs as desired, which I know was hurting my average and scoring some.

I throw 14 and I am quite pleased I used to throw 16 but a lot of time by third game I was not as accurate dew in part to weight since I have changed I don't get as tired the carry is great I don't think you will notice much if any change in carry due to the aggressive coverstocks of the balls these days. You probably also will pick up a few revs. If you do change you need to make total change don't try to throw 16 and 14. I hope this helps you some and good bowling

lol, its not free at all.....at all.I know its not good, but when I do the free armswing thing I just dont get anything on the ball. I figure if 14# hits and carries as well as 15 and 16, then wouldnt it be an advantage to me to be able to get more revs?

I can cup it, I just am not good at having a free armswing. Truthfully I dont even know how to do it correctly to get revs.

Here's a question for you BK25,

Do you or have you had problems in the
past within your tendons,ligaments that
run up to your forearm?

Also, what about your elbow or wrist?

Just curious, because these parts get strained
in time or if used a bit too much or without
proper rest can cause problems.Maybe,that
ball is a wee bit heavy on your arm and all.

Maybe, for now,go that one lighter until you
build your strength in those arm departments.
(aka see some threads above mine).

Yep,that's why I'm going back to 14lbs as well,mine
is problem one,the tendons between the forearm.

You decide,GOOD luck on your choice BK25.

next!

I throw 14 and like the hitting power. Ditto for 14-year-old White Dot Jr., she's also throwing 14.

I've thrown 15, but I get tired bowling more than three games and some tournaments require six- or eight-game blocks, so 14 is is for me

being a younger bowler but not too young i would actually suggest hitting the weight room. that is what i have done and it has helped the power part of my game out immensily. yes it takes time but in the end it is worth it. plus there is the added bonus of the ladies liking guys with muscles.

My experience and observations regarding 14 lb vs heavier:

I am speed challenged (14 mph on the Qubik reading is humming it for me) with medium revs.  I had always used 16 lb equipment until about a year ago.  Because of a hip replacement, I decided to try 14 lb.  Contrary to what I thought, my speed did not come up.  I did OK with the 14 lb (AZO Red Fire and a White Dot spare ball), but was never satisfied with the carry.  I have since returned to 16 lb and am carrying better.  I have also observed others that can throw the ball faster than I can use 14 lb with great carry.  CONCLUSION - The success of lighter balls is dependent on the speed the bowler can generate.  --  JohnP

The ball on a classic strike shot hits 1,3,5,9......so it's really only needing force of pin weight x 4 (2.2 pound, if so, 8.8 pound) assuming the pins are 2.2 lb. NOW- what force and angle must they be hit to maximize carry, I daresay it's going to be different for each weight. Rev rate, different for each weight.

2.2 pounds?  Well, you did say it was an assumption.

A full rack of pins weighs in at roughly 35 pounds.  A single pin should be between 3 lbs. 6 ozs. and 3 lbs. 10 ozs.  Just 2 pins outweigh a measly 6 pound ball.
