Have area will travel
« on: July 13, 2003, 10:10:41 PM »
Whenever I hear someone say that another bowler has 10 boards of area and that they don’t have a shot, I cringe. Unless the other guy is using the other hand I can ALWAYS find a place on the lane were I have at least ½ the amount of area the other bowler has. And if I can’t hit a 5 board area then shame on me. Now if the other guy has 3 boards I may only have 1 or 2 but that still is some area.

Their style may generate more area and/or better carry but I can and will find a shot and then it is up to me to execute.

Funny you don’t generally hear this the other way around. It’s generally “ I had a great shot and was killing Bob, If he just would learn to throw the ball better he could generate the scores I’m shooting”.

My point still is that if they have a lot of area, even if they are able to maximize the area with their style, then you still have area if you are lined up correctly.

Some bowlers act like they are locked out because the other guy has more room than they have even if they still have 5 boards.

And I will still say if the other guy has 6 boards area and your are lined up right and even if you don't match up as well, you will still have 3 boards of area yourself.

For area to be generated there has to be wetter boards inside and/or drier boards outside. Depending on the amount of oil and the different in amount of oil from the wet to dry different styles will maximize this area but about any style can generate some area with this type of shot if the lane is played properly.

On a true flat shot you have no area. You get what you throw regardless of style.

Do bowlers whose averages are inflated by easy conditions get overconfident and rely on the area? Yes most do, not all but most. And when they get on a condition that demands better shotmaking they generally lost.

agreed, i know a few guys who are notorious wall bowlers, so much so they will tell you flat out that the wall and equipment make them good. They know what they are, and are humble, and just enjoy being able to compete on the soft conditions, and i don't mind that. Its the ones who feel the need to showboat, talk smack, make snide comments, and things like that.

Some conditions, take where i bowl at on sundays. Amazingly dry, all my equipment is drilled for flatter conditions or tournament conditions. All of my equipment just is too aggressive, so much so i have to get way inside because i hit the ball well, about 5th or 6th arrow, and i have to get it out to about 5 to even get a chance at hitting the pocket. If i throw it hard, washout, soft its nose dive. Send it out too far it burns up too quickly and dies. It just isn't very forgiving, i actually find it easier to bowl on a sport shot because i can play a shot i am more suited for, 2nd or 3rd arrow with a tighter line.

Now while i can't keep any of my equipment on the lane, and usually use plastic up 15, the house bowlers have ICON'S, carbide bombs playing 10 or 15 with so much area its ridiculous, and to top it off they brag about how much better they are than other people.

Now this thing i bowl in is 10 bucks, and i like it because it does demand shot making, something i've been working on all summer, and it requires precision. It just angers me to see how easily they can hit a shot where the same shot demands me to thread a needle. I've been experimenting with older balls such as urethanes or polished resins and stuff, some success, still a work in progress.

Although KillerInstinct's comments are a bit oversimplified, in my opinion, I agree with what he's preaching. What separates good bowlers from great bowlers? It's the ability that the good bowlers have to put aside all distractions and simply concentrate on the lanes and what THEY need to do to score. We all know that it's frustrating when it seems that our opponent can spray the lanes anywhere to one side and carry when we have to thread the needle. However, worrying about the area that your opponent has is counterproductive. The only reason you should even look at where you opponent is scoring from is to see whether or not you may be able to utilize that same area, or some variation thereof. No matter what the stakes, the conditions or the opponent, the goal of bowling never changes. We're there to knock down all 10 pins on every shot. Therefore, the smart bowler need only pay attention to making fundamentally solid shots, instead of worrying about what your opponent is doing.

Bowling is without a doubt the dumbest, most pointless, most idiotic excuse for a game that has ever been invented. So, what time are we bowling tomorrow?

so a person who only scores on a wall with a super aggressive ball no revolutions or accuracy and averaged 230, is better than say a 210 average sport shot bowler who overmatches a wall and averages 210-215 because because of revolutions does not get the added benefit of the wall, and must be more precise.

is this what you are saying? it jsut seems stupid to me. Agreed on some conditions if someone is scoring who HAS A CLUE, yes copy them. But most league bowlers just buy a ball the hooks, throw it somewhere between 5-15 and watch the pins fly off the deck.

I don’t know where you are bowling but we have very few 230 average bowlers around here (and we have a lot of good bowlers around) and I would not say anyone around here averages over 210 with just a high tech ball with no revs and no accuracy.

I think far to often the bowlers who generate a lot of revs look down on others who don’t generate as many. They might consider someone who “only” generates 250 revs a no rev hack but they are not. If so then Walter Ray is a no rev hack.

They might not be real accurate, they might not have a lot of revs, but they will be one or the other.

And I will still say a wall is a wall. A good bowler can and will take advantage of it. Utilizing the correct line and/or drill and/or ball and/or release you can generate area.

If you are a 210 sport shot bowler and can’t average close 230 on a wall that hacks can then your game is too one dimensional.

Some styles benefit more from the wall but the cream should still rise to the top.

how is averaging 210 on a sport shot one dimensional? have you bowled on a sport shot?

Yes I have bowled on a sport shot and no I don't average 210 on it.

But you keep missing my point. I don't believe that someone who can average 210 on a "true" sport shot will struggle on a wall to where they will not average more. If you can average 210 on a sport shot you should average at least 225 on wall, I can't see how otherwise. And if that is true then the person averaging 210 on the sport shot has some shortcoming in their game to keep them from averaging more on the wall.

i average between 205-215 on sport shot depending on length and a few other factors. On league conditions i average 210-220. My problem is i can't use any of my equipment unless i get in extremely deep and play a very radical angle into the pocket. Like a 25 out to 5 or something stupid like that, the ball is crossing so many boards and using up so much energy it just doesn't hit as hard as it should, and if i msis out by a board it burns up, in by a board there isnt any chance of it holding off. All my equipment is drilled for flatter patterns with oil, and all of it works very well on it. Last year i got to play outside of 20 once in league, the only way i can do it is with a plastic ball which again i am sacrificing carry.

People tell me i overmatch and overpower a wall, but i don't want to cut down on my revs or speed trying to hit a wall because it works on a flatter pattern or a harder condition with less dry to rebound off of. I dont average bad on a wall, the highest i averaged on one this yr was a 228 in an unsanctioned league, but for the most part i am around 215-220 and its tough to be consistant having to play such a stupid line all the time just to hit the pocket. When i get on a pattern with more oil i get to play a more normal angle, the one others get to play on a wall, a 10 or 15 out to like 8 or 7, nice solid tight line with some swing. But otherwise i just cannot play it.

bones i dont have the money right now. I have been experimenting with older equipment with some success it just takes time to map out a shot. i think it'll work and hope it does, im sick of playing those angles i mentioned

We lost a game tonight (2 man teams, 2 games) to a guy who had no revs and lofted past the arrows every shot.  On a 130 avg. shoots 180.  Ouch.  Oh well, we pounded them enough the first game to take totals!

I'm not a big fan of the wall, but like the above scenario, we're going to have to accept it as one of those "bowling deals".  Sometimes it sucks, and sometimes it doesn't.

I'm like anyone else - It's cool when I've got 10 boards to hit, but it sucks when the other guy has it.
