Running the oil machine but still no oil.
« on: March 13, 2006, 02:19:40 AM »
I was bowling with a buddy on a pair on lanes that are not used for league on Friday. They are a by the desk. While we where bowling, the maintenance guy was running the oil machine, which he does before we bowl league every week. Anyway we finished bowling a couple of practice games. Moved to the freshly oiled lanes we where to bowl on in league, so I thought, and threw a one shadow ball, a seven pin, everything seemed cool, until league started. The lanes were almost bone dry. I wasn't prepared for it. Since the lanes are always oily. I only had my urethane trooper (spare ball) and next up was my Raw Doom. I ended up using my trooper and struggled to a 195 average for the night. Question: Cant'they tell when the oil machine is empty? Do they do that on purpose? Do they remove the oil and not put anymore down? Can they do that? During shadow balls I only threw one shot a seven pin, so I didn't notice. The lanes I practiced on just 20 minutes before where nice. Whats up with that?

BigHorhn--How did the right side play?  How far did you move into the lane?  Wondering.

THere could be oil in the machine and still none on the lanes.  Depending on the type of machine there are several reasons that you might not be seeing oil on the lane.  (plugged wick, someone screwed with the program, stripping after oiling, etc.)

BELIEVE ME.......when someone says there is no oil down there is still oil there.

I had a couple of guys (one being my father) that complains about "no oil" on the lane. So I stripped a lane one night and had them throw....left cutter before the arrows. THAT IS NO OIL.

We did that one night to prove a point EX, stripped the lanes then allowed two complainers to throw their plastic balls. Both have good amt of hand, in the left gutter before 30 feet. laughed my fat arse off."Now that's called no oil".

Good question scotts33. There was a little oil right in the middle by the headpin. If I played there I had to be real consistent. There was a little hold.

About there being oil, sure there was oil. I've bowled on lanes where you could swing your plastic ball. This was close. I thought about it maybe being different on the right side, but my teamates where using reactive pearl bowlingballs. One of my teamates owns a proshop and is my ball driller he carrys 10 balls at a time. He always has something to play with, besides him being a very good bowler. His brother who benefits greatly from him being a proshop owner, who also is a good bowler who's game is to swing the ball was throwing a bigtime reactive pearl. So in rectrospect, I guess there shot might have been the normal one or close to it, but mine on the leftside wasn't. Its usually medium to light. I just couldn't believe how dry it was and he just ran the machine. I'll can deal with it, I just wasn't prepared. I wasn't ready to make the proper adjustment on short notice. Two of my teamates who is high speed and revs to match wanted me to swing it more, thats not my A game.

You think they where just trying to lock the leftys out? (smile)

I think that's they key BigHohrn.  The lanes didn't play like you are used to seeing them and most lefties stay where they are the majority of the time.

Being a righty, we see lots of lane conditions and lane break down...heads broke down to beaucoup carry down.

BTW--I know some righties complain also if they don't see the same lane condition week after week.

JMO.  I'd like some place to play on the lanes from parallel to the gutter on the twig or in to 25 board at the arrows.  That's what I call playable.  I may not have a big score but 95% of the time I will be in the 1-3.

How did the rest of the league score....if you were at 195...what did the rest of the league do?  To me that's the most important factor.

I've seen the true no oil phoenomenon myself.  Showed up at league, lights came on for practice and I watched my first ball shoot dead right in the gutter.  Thought it was a fluke and did it again.  Next time plastic, in the ditch.  heck throwing fluffer I managed a 3 count.  The house manager came over and ran his finger across the deck at 30 feet, and you could hear the clean squeak.

The machine ran stripper only and never put a shot down.  We got the lanes reoiled , but lost out some practice time.  At least they listened

I've experienced no oil at a bar that had a pair of lanes in the back.  They were probably 40ft, and had the pins that were attached to strings so they could be set up without a real pin setter machine.  The lanes had never been oiled, and I threw one of their house balls, conventional grip, and it didn't even make it halfway down without plopping in the gutter.  I guess I came around it too much...heh
