The quest for the almighty 300
« on: September 28, 2005, 03:59:36 AM »
Okay after shooting 279 well over 50 times... I have hit the breaking point. I average 222 on my Sunday night league, yet no big 3. I bowl with guys who average 190 and have 3's. I shot 761 last sunday night... 11 in a row first game...(open in the first)... last game I went front 8... I really think it's a nerves issue for me... Anyone have any suggestions??? I'm thinking next time I get the front 10, I'm going to the bar  to do a couple of shots of whiskey... any suggestions...LOL... Thanks

Everyone handles the last few shots differently.  I personally try to stay aggressive, breath and not over think the whole situation.  The major key to the 12th for me is to move my feet one board deeper as I sometime pull the ball on the last shot.

Most importantly you've got to believe that you can do it!!

No suggestions here also.  I'm still trying to get a 300.  I'm a 170 ave bowler that recently got back into full time bowling after taking a eight year break from not bowling.  I guess if I didn't quit bowling I would have had it by now.  I guess I'll have another beer and wait for that lucky day when I finally hit the 300.

Sorry, no suggestions as I am in the same boat as you.  I think I'm the only 220+ average player around with no 300.  Sure, I've shot them in practice, but not when it counts.  Had a chance last season.  Left the 4-9 on the last ball for 298.  Go figure.

Ernie: I averaged 225 last year in my Monday night league (69 games) and didn't throw a 300 game. I haven't thrown one yet, been a bowler in leagues for 28 years. Came very close last year though- 299 (6 pin), 298 (6-8), 289 (7 pin) and a couple of 279's as well...

The key for me is to cross-over on the first ball in the tenth...that usually relieves the pressure and makes the next two seem easy.  Seriously, try not to over think.  If you're like me, the pressure usually starts to creep in after the 7th or 8th strike.  My guess is that you had to think very little on the first 5 or 6 strikes, so what would be different after that point.  Once you start to think too much, your muscles will tend to tense up because you are trying to control every little movement in your delivery.  You should only have one or two key things that you focus on in your delivery to ensure you make a good shot.  Just key on those things and let the rest fall into place naturally...as if it were just practice.  For instance, I personally key off of my first step and getting the ball moving early.  I make sure I take a normal size first step and I then get the ball moving early on the second step(five step approach).  Typically if I do those two things, my armswing and timing will almost always fall naturally into place.  Once you start over thinking your basically second guessing your abilities.  Just keep everything relaxed and loose and just trust what's been working, there's no reason to doubt it will work for another 2 or 3 shots.  Good luck and stay loose!!!!!

I've been lucky long enough...now I'd like to get good.

Maybe not the best advice, but it worked for me.  When you have the first 11 throw the rocket to the pocket.

This is something I can relate to. I have been around a few years and have never had a 300 or 800. I did have a 298 my 3rd year bowling way back in 76. I have not had the front 10 since then. I had the first 9 the other night and my heart rate went up a ton.

I have had 4 290's and don't have a problem throwing the last 3. But it seems like I get the front 8-9 and my pulse goes up. I hear all the time, you throw too good a ball not to have a 300 or 800. Yeah right......

When I shot mine I kept walking back and fourth between
the proshop and the set of lanes that I was bowling on.
Every ball was solid up till the 11th ball I pulled it got
lucky and that one. Walked away from the lane got me a drink
and went back and killed all the pins on the 12th ball.

i think a few shots o whiskey will help a lot. when my friend shot his second 3 he was flat out wasted. the the first shot in the tenth was light, and second shot was way to high, and the last shot was perfect.

I read a tip in BTM a very long time ago.  It was after my first 300, which I pushed the tenth ball bad.  The tip basically said to breathe, deep in your gut, not your lungs.  Take that breath, step up and do what you've been doing.  I remembered that the last 3 300's I've shot.  I pured every 12th ball, never moved my feet and I knew it was right when I let go of it.

That is the best advice I can give you.
