2019 Pba Shark Pattern
« on: November 09, 2019, 08:11:29 AM »
Has anyone bowled on this yet? I have been looking for videos or a discussion on how people attack this? I know rule of 31 will give a breakpoints of 17 but I am wondering if I will need to try to play straighter or if I can move left and hook it.

Shark has been tweaked as much as any pattern over the years.  However, it still plays best for most people going straighter.  Worst thing to try is going deep early with lots if surface trying to open it up

Okay, I think I am going to start with my hot cell and try to play up 17 and then hopefully move left a little with my black widow pink. Thank you.

Wait.  You're going to play Shark straight up 17 with a urethane ball?  That sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Rule of 31 generally does not work for longer patterns.  My advice is to bring a full arsenal of equipment to play any part of the lane as there are no absolutes with patterns.  Be prepared to play any part of the lane.

Obviously, Shark is a long pattern with a ton of volume so it will likely play inside.  However, that is not an absolute.  Look at where Richie Teece and Charlie Brown were playing the 2017 version of Shark which was 45 feet:

Keep an open mind and pay attention to what others are doing to have success on it.  Good luck!

I had the opportunity to play Shark on a relatively grippy Brunswick synth surface a while ago. Used a New Standard² (the strongest ball I had in my arsenal at the time, OOB surface) with a strong label drilling, and I was surprised that the pattern was easier to play than expected. Relatively straight path to the pocket, but the ball finished and carried well.

Doesn't sound like it, it is a recipe for disaster.

You need fast response balls on longer patterns. Fast response with lots of surface. A urethane is not a good option at all.

Agree with doom.  For us old strokers who like to square up, even a strong core pearl can be good.
