Title: help with early timing
Post by: phil1776 on September 20, 2009, 12:06:28 PM
My game has been suffering for so long and so bad, I
have thought about quitting the game. As a last ditch effort,
I got a friend that I bowled with 20 years ago to watch me
bowl a few games. The big change he could see is my early
timing, as long as I can remember I had late timing. I have
tried changing from five to four steps, starting the ball
later, raising the height of the ball at my starting position.
Anything I could think of, I also re-read Ron C's archives.
If anyone has any suggestions, as Ross Perot would say "I'm
all ears".
Thanks in advance.

I think I have troubles with early timing as well, and I think I'm on the verge of fixing it.  The first thing I would try is to move up on the approach.  I think this is a possible fix because it helps you get to the line sooner.  The other thing to try is slowing down the approach.  Ironically, going faster does not make my timing later, seems to even make it earlier at times.  There's also different pushaway techniques and timing.  YMMV.

Too much muscle in your swing.  You are grabbing and throwing the ball, which causes it to get to the release point too early.  Try relaxing and letting gravity bring the ball back to the release point.

That is one cause.  Without seeing a video of your swing it would be hard to tell.

Are you sure you have early timing? It is rare! Most bowlers have late timing, to some degree. A little bit late is good,a lot late is bad.
Late timing usually causes the ball to go too far right, and missing of your mark to the right.
Early timing usually causes missing left, and missing your mark to the left. Another sure tell sign of early timing is the ball speed. It will dribble off your hand and go about half normal speed! It is very obvious. You will also feel the ball try to take your arm with it.

Actually I have early timing and high ball speed.  I think the cause of the early timing is what determines what happens after the release.

Mine coming from muscle and an early hand turn, cause me to lose revs, track the thumbhole, and hit a little flat.

His or yours may be different.

Best thing to do is go see a USBC certified coach and get some video.

phil1776...

I think this video will help you understand the proper timing in the four or five step approach.

Phil, I have almost identical experience as you. Suffering with early timing. Have tried same things you mentioned and more in the last 3 years. No success altering timing. I hope you read this and have found something that fixed the timing problem. Please let me know if you have a  solution. Im 67 yr old been bowling since age 10. Im getting desperate for a solution. I also have a buzzsaw XXXL I use for spares, and somtimes fist ball. love it. Thank you for your response. Seems that only someone who has suffered from early timing can understand and offer REAL help. Ive tried so many different things, running out of ideas. I have tried everything listed in this thread already. hoping for something else.

Phil hasn't posted since 2010 so might not even be alive any more but hopefully someone can help you.  I had early timing issues but resolved it by moving up about three feet on the approach and getting used to the new footwork.  Maybe someone more knowledgeable can give you some tips.  Bowling lessons are usually the best and fastest way to correct a problem generally.

Do you have a hard time holding onto the ball?  I have early timing, but I think it is mainly because the ball wants to come off my thumb too soon.  So I end up turning the ball before I get to the bottom and create the early timing and get no leverage, no hook when I need it.

When we are talking about early timing, what do we actually mean?  Arm getting ahead of  the feet or turning the ball too soon?

arm swing ahead of feet. ball arrives before slide foot. I will try to post a side view video if I can figure out how to. sometimes ball arrives before I can get my trail leg out of the way, so hit leg coming through. Will bowl again Tues, and will continue my attempt to have higher backswing with extended push and quicker feet, and post video after that. here is a link to a rear view of last week. https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share/kkS3hZ4L127eqG7jj0unrPdImp09xg6i6Vc0IEDTBBx
