Title: High School Team seeking help
Post by: C-G ProShop-Carl on November 11, 2004, 02:59:54 AM
Ok guys/gals, this is a very long story but I am going to try to keep it pretty short.

I am an assistant coach for Campbell Memorial High School Bowling team (in Campbell Ohio). We break the three coaches into 3 slots......one works with the girls varsity, one with boys JV and I coach the boys varsity.

In Ohio high school bowling is still considered a club sport. We get absolutely not support from the school. The varsity boys won their district last year and it was not even acknowledged by the school.

The person that is actually titled head coach paid for the entire team's shirts out of his pocket last year. Some of the kids paid back the money they owed him, some of the others just did not have the means to do so. They did some fund raising (bowl-a-thon) but this money went to the banquet for the team.

Many of the area schools pay their coaches, Campbell does not. We coach because we love the sport, the kids and to help assure the future of the game.

As you can see the kids pretty much ran the entire team themselves as far as fundraising. What I am doing now is trying to help them. I know most of you are not from the area and have no ties to the school, but I am reaching out to everyone.

I have been told we are allowed to have a business sponsor the team, or even a group of businesses. So if you are able and willing to help support this team please message me and I will get in touch with you.

Thank you for reading this, and thank you for your support.

Some suggestions.

Get a hold of bowling headquarters and there is a great book for $10 that is the guide to high school bowling.  It is mostly written by Ron Hatfield CoachRon@insight.rr.com.  We are using this guide and it has worked very well.  There are several fundraising ideas and how to's.  Ron I believe is from Ohio and the school is Westerville South if I remember correctly.  They have a very good website also.  One thing that helps greatly is getting a booster club formed and getting the parents involved.  Our state is club also.  We do have someone that works with us as an afterschool project grant.  If you need anything or want information feel free to email me.

bowler257628,

I know how you feel. i was too home schooled. I was/am one of the best youth bowler in my area. My bowling coach was the head coach for both high school teams. He told to write a letter to the state office, and i got a letter back telling my i cant because i was home schooled. To bad for them beacuse i went to state and finished 1st in series and tied for 1st for high game.Just hang in there. Write alot of letters, and don't take no for a answer.

Nothing against you, but home-schooled kids SHOULD NOT be allowed to participate with and/or against public schools in games/competitions run by the public school system...PERIOD!  If you want to take part in sports with/against public schools then attend a public school.  It is your choice NOT to attend the public school so why should you have the right to play on their team???

EX,

Is there an address to where we can send donations?  Probably can't send much but I'm sure every little bit helps...I know how it was when I coached the golf team for the local high school.

EX-- let me know if you got my PM -- I started out on line but after I pushed "post reply", I wound up back on line as "guest user" --- I'm up for the donation but also asked if you could use a couple of balls if the kids need a possible upgrade on their eqpt.

No Offence man, but my parents still pay school taxes, bowling is a club sport where ANYONE can bowl it, and I am in district for the school.. Im not saying im a bowling god and can help the team win, I want to bowl a season worth of it. Im not takin a spot from anyone at all either. If I was I wouldnt do it because I understand that they DO go to the school and this is somthing they wanna do.But can you answer me this part VT, why did Indiana let a homeschooled kid take the spot of a quarterback in highschool football, but wont let me fill a spot in highschool CLUB bowling?

I want to thank everyone for their support and PMs so far. There are a few kids that still need equipment. There is one kid using a Bone XS, one using a Maxim and a couple of others... I will talk to them and see what I can work out with them about money covering shipping charges.

VT Turkey and Smash9, I will PM you guys. Smash, I did not get a message from you.

Here in Texas homeschoolers are not allowed to bowl due to U.I.L. rules.  Even though a club sport and not part of UIL we still go by YABA and UIL rules.  This is done to someday become a UIL varsity sport.  Another rule that is sometimes not thought about.  High School Bowlers cannot except bowling equipment as a gift from an outside source.  This also violates UIL.  We had a big deal going with Ebonite where they wanted to give EVERY high school bowlers in the Dallas metroplex a ball.  The ruling is that they cannot give the ball directly to the students.  We were also told that balls coming from supporters other than their parents are also illegal and violate the rules.  UIL is where the problems with rule violations reside.  YABA in Greendale thought it was fantastic that the kids get the balls. There are several things to look at as far as donation limits also you may need to check out.

Lurker,

That is exactly the reason that I coach. I have done what I can for the kids and it was not nearly what they deserve....thus the reason for this thread. I do not want to try to sound cliche or anything like that, but coaching and helping these kids is a way that I can give back to a game that has given me so much enjoyment and excitement in my life.

Ok guys, I just wanted to throw out thanks again to everyone that has donated to help the team in the best way they were able.

I also wanted to touch on one more thing, if there is anyone that has equipment they would like to donate for the girls they are in need of equipment. Out of the 9 of them on the team, 2 of them have their own bowling balls, the rest are using house balls. If you have anything, please let me know.

Thank you again, EVERYONE, for your support. I cannot express the happiness each of the kids that got a ball had when they recieved it. I think it is a great thing that having a good bowling ball can bring a confidence to a kid that had absolutely no belief in themselves.

It's getting to be that time of year.  We have regionals coming up in a little bit.  This year we go to Killeen.  165 miles from home.  We're right in the center of the Dallas/Ft.Worth metroplex with 2 regions less than 30 minutes away.  We have to travel out of the area 3 1/2 hrs and bowl same day.  It's going to be tough but that's why they are prepared and coached.  When it gets down to organization it's a must.  We lost the luck of the draw due to load balancing of districts.  This year we are hoping for a school bus and to be able to load everyone team, parents, coaches and equipment on the bus and go down in one group.
We really do not want everyone strung out all up and down I35 at 5 in the morning.  The joys and challenges of High School Bowling.
