High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Teams – Male and Female

Hi –

I recently became one of four coaches’ with a local high school.  Our bowlers range from not very skilled and do not understand the basics to some that have some talent.

In your opinion, in what sequence and what skills should we teach these young athletes?  We are somewhat schedule limited since we only have the athletes for 2 hours twice a week.  We have a competition every week.

The male JV team is getting beat up on poor spare shooting and not hitting the pocket or head pin on the strike ball.  Leaving to many designer spares.

Thanks for the help –

Denny

When I have a new team I start them working on baker matches immediately.  I'll also have them pick up each others spares for a few games.  A game of low ball is also done frequently.  While they are going through the spare exercises  we work on correcting movement and posture problems.  Sometimes we need to shift people with severe problems with swing and timing to someone that is working on that.  FRom the start they are taught to call out the pin numbers.  Once they get a little time under their belts we switch to learning to strike and line up.  From there they get to learn spare making again and correctly.  It's hard under a short time frame but it can be done.  The whole time they are getting basics and mental prep.
