Brunswick Phantom?
« on: February 20, 2013, 12:24:11 PM »
Monday, i was having issues getting any of my stuff to stay on the correct side of the lane, and found an old Brunswick Phantom on the house ball rack that fit.  threw 2 out of 3 remaining strikes with it, first guess on where to stand was right.

Can anyone tell me when this ball was around, and what kind of reaction the ball was supposed to have back in the day?

I thought It was a ball that was ahead of its time.  I believe it was back in the early 90's.  Urethane too.  It was suppose to be a hook monster.  I'm sure you can find stuff on it through Googling it.

It has the same basic core as the Blast Zone, if I am not mistaken.

I know the Ultra Zone had a version of the Phantom's core.

As I recall, it was circa 1991...I was living in a small East Texas town from late '90 through mid-'92 and bowled in Beaumont.  Mark Williams happened to have been home at the time I was getting it drilled and he did the layout (he was on staff with Brunswick at the time).  Had it not been for that little tidbit, I would have been hard-pressed to recall the window of time :)  I think I still have that ball somewhere...

…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

I was not a bowler at the time, but if I have my history right the Phantom was the first asymmetric ball to hit production.  I think the JPF Axe was patented prior to the Phantom though.

My driller told me the Phantoms came with a big fat book and he attended an all-day seminar on how to drill them because nobody really understood asymmetric cores at the time.

Neither did they! That's why I said it was a ball before its time.

Thanks Kidlos, very informative.  The one at the bowling alley is red.  Thinking about swiping it...lol

Now I look at what Mo Pinel is doing pushing the edge on drilling balls and understanding how it impacts the ball's properties.  Just look at how far we've come.

Grab that ball.  The only other asymmetric urethane around is the Seismic Desperado LE, and those are discontinued.

If I remember correctly, the only real good one of the 3 was the Black one. I never had the blue one, but the Crimson hit like a marshmallow for me. The Pink Hammer was much better for a light oil ball.

These balls were used to set the RG and Diff. limits by the ABC back then.

The Crimson Phantom set the High RG limit.  I heard it was mostly used in this area as a spare ball.

The Black Phantom set the low RG limit and I believe the Blue set the differential limit.
