Hitting the Pocket and leaving the 5 pin
« on: December 15, 2008, 02:49:43 AM »
I watched a bowler beside me this week who hit the pocket and left the 5 pin. He did it twice. This doesn't make sense to me. He was playing 2nd arrow (down and in). Using a high end ball (Black Widow). He didn't have much rotation but still a high end ball (16 mph +) hitting the pocket going towards the 5 and doesn't hit it?

I have done this with a plastic ball playing down and in but it seems strange with a high end ball.

All it takes to leave the 5 pin on a (seemingly) good pocket hit is to have the ball skid into the pocket instead of rolling. That way the ball will deflect more than usual. Carrydown, playing too deep for that shot, too much side roll (spin), or even the ball rolling out can be possible causes.

The phases of ball motion are skid, hook, and roll. If you could see the shot in slow motion you'd more than likely see that the ball deflected too much.

Wat?

As for the original post, as others in the topic have said, the ball is burning up/skidding too far and deflecting a lot as soon as it hits the pocket.

YOU CANNOT SHOOT 290 THIS WAY. You could shoot 289 however.

I have seen Duke and Walter Ray throwing 16s I believe just barely touch the 5 pin with their up the back releases and it surprisingly carries.

Sometimes I believe with that type of release that the pin only carried becuase the breeze of the ball knocked it down.

I'd like to say I've never left a 5 pin on a pocket hit as I have a very side roll type of release....but I can't.  Damn 5 7!  Very rare for me...but quite hateful!

PS and double damn the 5 7 10!

With the ball taking the 5 pin out, it couldn't be a good shot! Can we say, "deflection"! Could be in the oil and not rolling, rolling early and burning up, or needs work on their release! Just my $.02, Bruce
As I told my friend after he left a 5 pin, I told him to throw his purse at it next time! He loved it!

I should also mention he had quite a few strikes in his three games. He is over 200 in average. It just amazes me that the ball is heading in the direction of the 5 and it doesn't hit it.

The ball has to be burning out. There is no way on these lanes that it is skidding into the pocket. So when it hits the head pin there is nothing left and the ball just straightens out into the 3 pin.
