MD's, chiropractors, anyone - I've got a problem
« on: December 28, 2004, 11:59:12 PM »
Here's the deal:  starting about 5 weeks ago my "good" leg started giving me trouble.  I might just be standing and slightly hyperextend my right knee - the pain would almost make tears come to my eyes.  Then that stopped happening and I thought "OK, all is well."  I took 3 weeks off from bowling to allow both knees some recovery - by last night things felt pretty good.  Then, while bowling, I felt first a pain just below my knee, slightly on the inner part of my lower leg.  Then I started getting some pain just above the knee, on the outer edge of the kneecap.  By the time I got home I could feel swelling above the knee and the pain below had extended down my leg almost to my foot.  That part is sore to the touch this morning.

Any thoughts on what is going on?  I intend to call my Dr. when his office opens (it's only 6:45 here), but thought I'd see if anybody had a clue as to what is going on.

Rag, yes you need to get a good medical opinoin. Get with a good Neurosurgeon to determine the cause.  I have had very similar problems this past year.  I have had 3 spinal blocks and am now going to a chiropractor that does acupuncture with electrical stimulation. The lumbar vertabrae, specifically L4 causes sciatic pain in the area you discribe and I know how painful it can be.  Once the sciatic nerve gets inflamed it can be hell.  I started with my Neurosurgeon (had a 3 level fusion done in my neck 4 years ago) and through MRI he determined the cause. The spinal block is only temporary relief.  I have found more consistant relief from the chiropractor with adjustments and accupuncture with electrical stimulation.  I also wear a back brace when bowling (elastic with adjustable stretch $25) which is also helping. I am 60 years old so part on me is just getting OLD!!!!!!!!  If you would like more information just let me know, good luck.

Hey Rags without examining you but what it sounds like is that you may have a joint mouse i.e. a floating particle in the joint space or a torn medial meniscus wedging itself into the joint space keeping it from fully extending without pain.  It could also be a tibial rotation.  Did you ever get that checked from the last time I emailed you?

Sounds like you need to get to an orthopedist and not a neurosurgeon.  I would have an MRI done.  You may need to have the knee scoped as well.  In the meantime ice massage over the area for two minutes once an hour may help reduce the inflammation.

Let me know how it goes.

Rags,

You're not going to like this, but I speak from personal experience, as I had pains in several parts of my legs. You need to lose more weight. It does help relieve some of the physical stress.

Charlest, very true my friend.  I had already, long before this, decided that I was going to try and lose 50 pounds after the first of the year.  Probably have to relearn how to cook (sigh - there goes my recipe book of around 1200 recipes).  Weight watchers, here I come.  So long to a life of blissful hedonism.

Rags,

Go ahead and drop 40 bucks on the Eating for Life book.  It's got a ton of recipes that are pretty tasty.  My wife and I got it a few weeks ago and we love it.  After this season of indulgence, we really intend to use it in earnest.

In the meantime, take care of the knee.  I hope your doc has a good prognosis that requires little invasive intervention to correct.

Drink water.  Lots and lots of water.

Rags,
I took off 30 lbs this year with a low carb diet---not zero carbs. I drank low carb milk, used low carb bread and cut out as much processed sugar as I could. I also exercise 20-30 minutes a day with light weights at home. I also agree with the previous post about the water. Guys our size need 80-100 ounces a day.
The good thing was that by doing it thyis way the weight came off 2-3 lbs a week which made my doctor very happy. That rate is what most docs recommend, anyway.
Good luck and remember that it's gonna be a slow uphill battle.
 Oh yeah..........
I did take one day and kinda binged a little on the carbs, but my doc said that doing it this way isn't a bad thing as your body does need them. Just not at the rate that most of us stuff in the carbs.
