Title: how can I learn to slide
Post by: perfecone on November 15, 2004, 09:09:47 PM
30 years of bowling and I have never learned to slide at the line. I plant my foot and release.  Well as you would expect now that I am in my 40's, every time I bowl league my knee begins to ache.  actually its not the knee as much as the muscles around the knee. sometimes even my quad muscles.  So what do I do know?  rebuild my game from the ground up? don't even know where to start. any advice is gratly appreciated

I know what you mean.  You might try a different pair of bowling shoes like sst 6 or something with adjustable soles.  Use a little powder.  That may help as well.  It's had for me to slide because my left ankle cracks and pops now.  I have arthritis in my joints and I'm only 38.

Cheers

DO NOT USE POWDER!!  Easy slide is available and leaves no residue on the approach. I have nearly killed myself from people using Baby Powder on thier shoes and then me hitting it on the lane. I slide an average of 1.5 feet.

Good luck with your effort to increase your slide.

JMAN Easy Slide WILL leave residue if too much is used.  Remember, it is against ABC rules to use anything that leave a residue onn the lanes and affects other bowlers.  If you do use Easy Slide, etc make sure that you wipe it off so that it dosn't leave anything on the approach.

Better yet, get a pair of Dexter or ABS shoes and adjust the soles/heels to get some slide.  I, for one (and I'm not alone), feel that Easy Slide, etc should be banned completely.

Not enough knee bend keeps the heel on the floor... and keeping weight to far back in your slide keeps the knee locked. Thus you want more slide you have to learn to move your weight forward over the sliding knee dend you sliding knee to raise the heel off of the ground. As well you will have to adjust your timing because now you will include the added time of the slide to your approach. So you must start the ball later in your approach to compensate. Finally, because you are accustomed to planting you will more than likely have to push really hard into you slide step to gain enough momentum to slide.

After 30 years it is not easy to learn but it is so benificial.

my teammates and myself believe that the sst5 slide easier than the sst6s...for some reason...ive only had 6s and dont slide....my teammates have tried both and wont touch the 6s again as they cant slide in them

After that many years of doing one way it is going to be hard to learn how to slide. Changing shoes may help however that may not be the solution. You don't want to use powder at all. Easy slide is a good choice a lot of people will also use ashes. Myself I have not seen any residue left from that, however I am sure there is some that is left. You may just have to try to redo your approach to be able to slide. Best of luck.

you can try putting superglue on the bottom of your soles (seriously guys, this works). One guy I bowl league with does this, says he slides a good foot more just from this technique.

perfecone--Try a slide sock.  Purchase one or make one out of an old gym sock and practice sliding without the ball. Remember to keep the heel of your slide shoe clean, 'cause it's your brake. After a few practice slides try a shot with your ball.  Good Luck!

Take a look at one of our products.  Even people with SST6's and ABS use them.  We even have a patented model just for them.  By far the best Slide Sock product on the market.  Beats tinkering with your shoes and works on all conditions.
