A couple of questions here. Do you adjust off your strike line, or do you shoot off the third arrow and adjust your feet, for instance. Also, do you use plastic on ALL spares or only certain ones? I find that the spares I am having the most trouble with are on the LEFT side rather than the right. I'd rather see a ten pin leave than a seven pin any day of the week. Just trying to get a feel of what works for you!

For my left side spares I shoot down ten and move my feet accordingly and for the right side I shoot across 20 and move my feet accordingly.....

I shoot plastic at everything. And to boot, I throw it fast with dead forward roll. BUt of course, that means I can't blame a missed spare on the ball hooking, so I lost that "edge"...

splendorex,I too have problems going cross-lane at 7 pins(usually miss right)I seem to have a better chance going straight at them by standing as far left as I can go throwing straight up the seventh arrow(first arrow for lefties). It's a bit awkward at first, but it works better than playing off my strike line(third arrow)moving feet five boards right. All this with my Hypower Red(dull)

I throw plastic straight at every spare. Period.
Double wood, splits, headpin spares. Everything. Because of this, my line to shoot spares doesn't change much - and this includes moving from sport shot to house shot conditions. Best change I ever made to my game.

Just recently worked with my coach on a spare system. Plastic for all left side spares (2-4-7-8 and combinations) and strike ball for right side spares (3-6-9-10 and combinations).
With the system I adjust off the strike ball for left side spares moving the feet right 3 boards and the target moves 5 for the 2 and 1 board right for each progressive pin back. Example strike stand 23 target 10, 2 pin stand 26 target 15, 4 pin stand 29 target 16, 7 pin stand 32 target 17.
Right side spares I start with standing 19 targeting 14 for the 3 pin, stand 17 target 14 with a slight turn of the feet towards the target, and for the 10 stand 15 target 15 with a slight angle towards the target.
For the combinations, target the front pin and adjust slightly for the particular combination.
It may sound complicated, but it is actually easy to use and has upped my spare shooting percentage.

I throw plastic at everything unless i have a sleeper or bucket(depends on how I'm feeling for the bucket)
I basically rotate off the 4th arrow for spares and move my feet accordingly.

In March BTM is a nice article on the Triax system. I modified it some and that's how I approach spares. It is difficult, at first, you have to 'retrain' your steps, motion, arm swing and your brain, but I went from 30-45% to 60-75% ( excluding impossible splits) but I have only been using it for 2 1/2 months. Next season will tell the tail.

I throw plastic straight at 4-,6-,7-, and 10-pins plus combinations thereof. I also throw plastic at the 3-10. Depending on the lane conditions (THS vs. flatter pattern), I use my strike ball for some 2- and 3-pin combinations. For double wood (2-8, 3-9, and combinations thereof), I almost always use my strike ball, adjusting off my strike target.
How's that for clear as mud?
On edit: Just to add a bit of insight to your left side spare problem. I also used to have a little more trouble with the left side than the right. When shooting left side spares with your strike ball, you run the risk of catching the oil in the middle if you miss a bit right or having the ball run by the pin if you miss a bit left. In know this sounds intuitively obvious, but on a THS, this becomes exaggerated because of the volume of oil in the middle vs. the outside.
You could also have problems if you shoot crosslane at your left side spares if your swing is inside-out, and your ball goes left to right on your strike shot (again, often the case if you bowl a lot on a THS). More than likely, your body will not be in the right position to get the ball to go right to left in order to pick up 4- or 7-pins.
When I shoot left side spares with my plastic spare ball, I shoot them from the left side, using the fifth arrow as a target.
BTW, I also shoot washouts with my plastic spare ball, from the left side, again throwing straight. To avoid turning my spare ball as I would my strike ball, I come close to throwing a backup ball, and sometimes actuall back it up a bit. When I miss by enough right
I have been known to convert the washout by covering the headpin AND the ten pin with the ball.

I used to use a polyester for 6 and 10, and my normal strike ball for anything else. But recently I also use the polyester for 4 and 7 leaves (easier to make, blends out oil influence!), and the occasional 3-6-10 or a 3-10 baby split, as well as some occasional ugly, wide open leave. Especially the left side was a huge problem for me, making the transition to polyester. But after having found a line (I play over 4th arrow to the left, 3rd arrow to the right) in training it works consistently and with more error margin than the "reactive ball across the whole lane" option. The oil and carrydown is the problem.
Anything else and double wood is still played with the reactive or particle at hand, when I need the roll and the power to kill the back row.

Thanks all, I think I will try shooting the left side spares from the left as Rick suggests. For some reason I just always had an aversion to trying this, but I think maybe it will work out well for me. I don't like trying to hook the ball into the 6 or 7 area as I will often miss just enough to catch too much oil as Rick suggested. Throwing cross lane with those spares also gives me some oil problems occasionally, probably due to there being more oil on the left side, and I often want to pull that shot as well. Maybe plastic straight at it will work well for me!

Personally, I just don't leave spares. (I wish!!
) I tend to shoot all of my spares from the left side (including left-side spares) with whatever ball I happen to have on the rack at that moment.

I might be the only one but i was taught to keep it simple
, being raised by a carpenter/construction worker/ Fixture worker
I was shown that you use only 1 arrow for spares!!! I use the third arrow (right side) and set up my feet where ever allows me to make the spare
one target all the time ROCKS!!!!!!!
If only it was the same for strikes
