How to prevent Ball Cracking?
« on: September 29, 2007, 07:43:22 AM »
I have an RSX I have not used in a year but I just noticed it has a crack running from the thumb hole about 5 " long. What could cause this. I live in Va an the ball has been in my basement on a ball rack with several others yet this is the only one that cracked?

Seems to be that you shouldn't leave them sitting around.  I've had one ball crack Bruns Navy Fuze.  During summer in closet.  Me thinks either use 'em or lose 'em.

Does cracking around the finger & thumb count? I have two that have cracked around the holes a Track Hex and a Ebonite V2 Sanded. The V2 has a sliver moon crack on the back of the thumb hole and the Hex has hairlines half way around both fingers. Is this age or from use? The V2 has been sitting in my living room for approx. six months, I just saw the crack Saturday when I sat down to clean my equip from league.

I've had a number crack over the past couple of years (2 Velocities, Max Velocity, Tornado, Jungle Green Predator). These were complete, ball trashing cracks.

In all cases there were sitting on the ball rack in my garage. The only thing they had in common was a lack of use.

I was lucky enough to see the predator crack...I was moving it over on the rack to add another ball...it bumped the ball next to it will a very dull dud...I watched the crack move in slow motion completely around the ball.

I've had two balls crack. Both will sitting on the shelf in the basement (70-75 degrees, dehumidifier running...stays pretty dry). One cracked from the ring finger through the pin. My fault for drilling the finger really close to the pin, then super-gluing the grips in. The second cracked across the bridge. Not sure the cause on this one, but the ball is a first drill with very few games on it. This one is not a drilling error...plenty of meat in the bridge and pitches are correct so the holes do not taper together.

In my experience, the only balls I have seen crack are ones where the finger/thumb hole was not beveled (spider-web), the bridge was less than 1/4 inch, pin was partially drilled out, coverstock was way too brittle (Catalyst), bad batches came from plant (example- Paradigm), excessive heat/cold.
Out of the thousands of balls I have drilled, I have had one crack that was sitting in a locker at another bowling center, going un-used for two weeks.  My belief is that since the locker was located next to an exit door made of glass, it must have gotten too hot (being it is late august)and then cooled rapidly by the A/C vent located directly above the locker.

A friend of my sons had a ball crack while it was sitting in his room. It had been plugged and he was getting ready to have it drilled only to find it cracked. Weird thing was that it not only cracked the ball, but the lug material that was in the thumb hole.

Oh well, it was $2.00 at a thrift store.
