Stupid Question
« on: August 20, 2005, 07:51:50 AM »
I'm new to all this terminology for bowling, and was wondering what's the definition of a HOUSE SHOT, and A WALL UP SHOT is. I've been reading some of the reviews and this always comes up.

Thank you for your time.

A typical house shot has dry boards on the out side and more oil in the middle. So if you miss right it will hit the dry and come of it and if you miss to the left the ball will hold in the oil.(right handed)

I think wall shot is oil all the way down, poor carrydown.

No, wall shot is just another name for a THS.  A lot more oil on the inside than outside, so if you miss to the right, it's like you hit a "wall" of dry and the ball comes back in and hits the pocket.  Another term is adult bumper bowling.

There are Sport Shots which come in every shape and size. Which are harder than a THS. http://www.bowlingmembership.com/sportbowlingsite/index.asp

Yep.  Sport shots have a defined ratio of oil in the middle, compared to the outside boards of the lane.  It used to be 2:1 in terms of "units" of oil, but I think they changed it to either 2.5 or 3 to 1.  The ths is anything above that, usually far higher.  There are also the PBA patterns which aren't quite as hard as the sport shots but still more difficult than a THS.  And there is also what is called a flat pattern, where there is the same number of units of oil on each board, a 1:1 ratio.  No recovery.  And there are also reverse blocks, which means there is more oil outside, than inside.  Those are always interesting to play on.

This is some very interesting stuff. Thank you all for clearing things up for me.

And just curious, what are the other shape and form of a Sport shot?

Short, medium and long patterns. Short making the ball react sooner and long making the ball react later, or not at all. lol

Nah, the sport shot gives you no room for error, where as on a house shot you can wing it way out right, and it'll come back, and if you pull it left, it skids in the oil so it doesn't hook, or hook as much.

Wouldn't the Sport shot be easier in the long run?

Well, If you start bowling on Sports patterns it will most of the time increase your average on a THS. Sport patterns will definitely bring your game up a notch, I belive it will help out in the long run, but a THS is not harder than a Sport shot. On a THS you will have like 8 boards and Sport Shots have 3 at the MAX of error room.

No, the sport shot will break down faster and become harder to play as time goes on, keeping bowlers on there toes and always looking for new ways to find the pocket. The house shot Breaks down slower often and allows bowlers to play one area for a longer ammount of time, making scores higher and easier to achieve.
