How have you guys made the 4-6?
« on: December 18, 2005, 03:31:12 AM »
Just curious.  What is the "standard" way to make it?  Yesterday in a tournament I made the 4-6-7 by standing all the way to the left and just launching it straight up the gutterline, sliding the 4 over to the right which fell over and knocked the 6.  So that made me wonder, what is the "normal" way to make it?  Are you supposed to do what I did, or should you try to bounce it out of the pit or something?  Just curious.

made it once in a late league. basically shot at the 4 pin and luckily bounced out of the pit and took out the 6. made the 4-6-7 once by sliding the 4 into the 6 and the 6 fell forward. again, very lucky.

when i was in high school threw my target zone at the 6 it broke at the last moment to catch a piece of the 6 and threw it into the 4. Today I made the 4-9-10, the other day I left the 6-7-10 and took out the 7 and the 10.

I normally just take 2 balls on my right hand one on the thumb and the other on my fingers.

Ive never made the 4-6, 4-6-7, 4-6-10, the big 4, the 7-10, the 8-10, the 7-9, or the lilly (5-7-10). Ive seen most just whip the ball at any of the pins and hope for the best.

To answer your question, there really isn't a "normal" way to make that shot.  I have made it a couple times, in different ways.  Once, sliding the 6 over to get the 4 and the other time, bouncing the 4 out of the pit and across to kick out the 6.  The "preferred" way is to throw at one of them hard and hope you just get lucky.

Form my experience and in bowling literature, there seem to be 2 "schools" for this conversion which also are applicable to the 7-10 - but these are justa academic, I think.

Strategy #1:
The "conservative" direct version: try to make a very light outside hit on the preferred side of your choice. For the 4-6 this means either aiming for the 7 or 10 pin, hoping that the slight hit creates just enough sideways movement or tumbling to have the pin fall over in a 90° angle and take out the other pin. Medium speed recommended.
For the 7-10 this would mean a well-placed shot into the gutter in the pin deck area, with more speed for the longer journey of the target pin across the deck or making it bounce off the back wall back into the pit to take out the other corner pin.

Strategy #2:
The indirect "rebound" version: This time, aim for an inside side hit an the pin of your choice. Higher speed for more pin action. Idea is to have one of the pins slam sideways into the pit wall and make it tumble back onto the deck, taking out the one still standing. For the 4-6, this needs a lot of energy. For the 7-10 I think that this would be more effectice than the outside hit method #1, but I haven't seen anyone making both, either accidently or with a certain plot for the shot.

best way to make it, not leave it lol. if only it were that easy. don't think there's a textbook way to pick it up. with something like that, i usually just make sure to make one of them for count. if it's the 6, 7, 10, something like that, i go for count.

I've made the 4-6-7, hit the 6 thin, bounced and tapped the 4, it fell back into the 7.

Ive only seen it made once, and it was by sliding the 6 into the 4 (righty)  Funny part was the guy thought he wiffed it and turned around disgusted.  The ball just barely clipped the 6, and it fell over and caught enough of the 4 to push it over.

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.
