200 is overrated if you get 7s on a sport pattern.

I understand that its overrated but that was not my question

I started bowling when I was 5 but definitely haven't bowled consistently since.  I played other sports and quit bowling like 3 times at least.  Before I bowled for university, I averaged 190s range.  After university my average jumped really high.  2008-2009 is when I was at my best.  I returned to bowling seriously again after 6-7 years out and the past month have averaged 208+.  If I had bowled consistently and had a good coach, I think I could average 200+ in 1-2 years.  But bowling once a week for years, never having a good coach until college, and not really gaining bowling strength in my arm and wrist until after college, it messes everything up haha.

I would say bowling strength in arm, wrist, and hand is underrated.  If you have them, you can get pretty good pretty fast as long as you don't turn bowling into a 1 shot show where you can only go coast to coast and have ZERO clue on how to make spares or throw a straight ball.

Not really relevant in todays environment, but I started bowling at age 12 in 1960.  I hit 180 my third season.  Stayed in the mid to high 190's through college.  Went from hard rubber to polyester ball in 1974 and averaged 214.  That is still the biggest jump in my average during the entire evolution of balls.

I started in 1962 at 10 years old. By high school I was 175 to 180 in high school.

I quit while I went to college and started back up after graduation. From 1974 to 1985 I would average 180 to 190. This was in small town houses and I was one of the highest average in town.

In 1980 I moved to a bigger city (Wichita) changed from a full roller to 3/4 roller. By 1986 I started averaging over 200 and have since.

I was 15 and a junior in hs in 1962 when I started in AJBC league.  Averaged 127 my first season and 157 my second, that won  the most improved bowler award.  I bowled one league a season while in college and averaged around 165.  After graduating college in 1968 I quit for a couple of years other than an occasional open bowling session.  I started back in the summer of 1971 and got serious about the game.  In the '73 - '74 season I averaged 200, using a combination of plastic and rubber balls on lacquer finished lanes that had a slight block around the 17 board.  I've averaged considerably higher since but am still most proud of that 200 average.  --  JohnP

I started bowling at 4 in the late 70s.  I didn't really start taking it seriously until I was 16 in 1990.  I didn't have a 200+ season until 1996.  So it took about 6 years for me.

When I was bowling back in the mid 70's to late 80's I was between 195-198

had one year with 201 in 1984 never repeated. I stepped away for 14 years due to career choices. when I came back ave 189 1st year back, next year was 202. Decided I wanted to get better so I went and found a gold coach and went up to 229 over the next few years. been holding steady for a while now. Just an FYI lost my prime bowling years because of my job. I bowl both house and sport league, holding 200-204 in sport depends on the year.  at my age and arthritic wrists I am happy with what I have done. Been back for 17 years, Never put your bowling on hold unless you have no other choice. I lost many years of bowling.

Just my .02

I started when I was 3 in the mid-late 70s as well. Took it serious throughout my life, but didn't average above 170 until I was 15, which was 1989. picked up my first high-performance ball at the time (Faball Blue Hammer), which my average went up at least 15 pins over the course of 3 years. wasn't until early/mid 90s that I didn't average above 200, so I'd say 17 years for me, putting it at 1993.

My record total score after 4 games is 794.
After the first match of the new season my avg is at 185. I'll probably stick around there for this season.
Now if only the people I play with would come to that lvl, we can win matches this season :P
If I can focus and get my balls to get over the second mark, then I'll probably get an avg of 200. I'm doing really well at getting it there these days, which is very fun.
That 794 was in the last practice before the summer break though.

Started in 1963 about 12 years old.  Averaged 196 in 1971 age 19 before my Uncle Sam requested my presence which set my bowling back a few years.  Did not average 200 until age 50, 2001.

Started bowling AJBC at age 4 in 1975.  Was at 180 during my prime junior years.  Joined ABC in 1989 and was able to average 201 my first year.  My body was finally catching up.  I was 4'-11" in high school and wasn't until my senior year did I get above 5"10".

Went on to bowl for the Marine Corps during my stint (1990-2000) and then bowled collegiately for a little while.  Now around 230 bowling once a week with a 5 year old ball.

I have to agree with a previous post that stated that determining one's true average
is very difficult. I started bowling in the early 60s. My first sanctioned average was
138.  By the time I graduated high school, it was 167. By age 21, it had risen to 186.
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, which had its fair share of very talented bowlers, including Buddy De Luca who holds the distinction of winning the Petersen Classic twice and Rich Collier who is in the Pennsylvania bowling hall of fame. At least in Pittsburgh,
the lanes conditions were darned tough. For years, you could count the number of
sanctioned 200 averages on one hand--and still have a finger or two left over. There were
no walls, crowns or blocks in those days. None. Even the introduction of balls like the
famed Columbia Yellow Dot and the Brunswick LT-48 did not raise averages by any appreciable amount. The real catalyst that started the average explosion here occurred in 1977, when the ABC dramatically relaxed the lane dressing rules overnight. Once they started to allow crowning, the average explosion took off--- overnight.  Since then, the introduction of stronger balls accelerated averages even further. However, it was the relaxation of those lanes dressing rules that really did it.

I started bowling in 1975 at the age of 13. My goal that first year was to average 100. I got it. In 2003 at the age of 41 I took lessons over the summer. For the 2003/2004 season I not only average 200 for the the first time, but I also bowled my 1st 300 game.

Actually a point of clarification.  The ABC did not relax the rules in 1977.  They actually tightened them in 1976, requiring essentially even oil to be applied gutter to gutter.  The rule was referred to as amendment 4.  This rule was very unpopular and not consistently enforced partly due to lack of accurate measuring devices and partly due to variations in interpretation by local secretaries.  It was under this rule that Glenn Allisons famous 900 was disallowed.  The rule was not changed until approximately 1985 when the limited distance dressing rule was introduced.  It allowed oil to applied in any manner but could not be applied our buffed past 28 ( later 24 ) feet.  The limited distance dressing rule was changed under the so called system of bowling in 1989.  It allowed long oil, but required at least 3 units of oil to applied out to the gutter.  That is still the rule we have today.

Unlike the experience of the gentleman from Pittsburgh scoring in the Pacific Northwest took a huge jump with the introduction of soft yellow dots and shore Ds in 1974.  Prior to 1975 there had been only 2 800 series in the history of our association going back 40 years.  In the 1975 season we had 6 800 series, one by a bowler who had never previously cracked 700.  My own average increased from 199 in 1974 with a hard rubber ball to 214 in 1975 with a Columbia Carmel white dot.
