How many particle balls in your arsenal?
« on: May 22, 2006, 12:08:27 PM »
I have two in my arsenal. One for heavy and medium. Mine are the Swamp monster and the fuze eliminator. I think it's important to have at least 2 in your arsenal load and low load particles.

Ambush, one and only. I do have a Colossus at home I pull out every once in a while to throw, ball hooks about as much as my Blue Hammer (layout), but hits as hard as anything else I own.

FYI, the Ebonite Trimax series (I, II, and III) was reactive, not particle.  The TPS series (also I, II, and III) was particle.

I currently have three - Legends Big Kahuna, Hammer Hawg, and Storm Trauma Recovery.  The latter two are particle pearl.

In general (there are a lot of things that go into this and it isn't even always the case), particle balls are smoother, more controlled than normal reactive resin balls.  They will hook more in oil and less violently on the backend.  If you took a normal resin ball and could magically add particles to it, you'd see a smoother, earlier, less angular reaction.

Think of the particles like treads on a tire.  Mud and snow tires have a lot of bumps that protrude from the surface, it gives added traction in slippery conditions but doesn't really do anything (and gives arguably less traction) on dry roads.  Racing slicks give monstrous traction on dry roads but slide all day on wet roads.

That's the idea behind particle vs. reactive resin.  It's not quite that extreme, but the gist of it is there.  As someone else said, they like particle balls because they give a look similar to urethane: early and continuous, but with the strength to handle today's higher volumes and slicker oils.

That's the extremely simple version.  Keep in mind that there is a LOT that goes into ball reaction, not the least of which is surface prep.  A highly polished particle ball will be practically useless under conditions where a 400-grit solid reactive shines, even if the base covers have comparable strengths.

I don't have any particle balls in my arsenal.  I just don't have a need for one.  Even for heavy oil I use a reactive ball.  If the lanes are big time flooded then I will just point the ball.  I don't run across flooded lanes too often.  So a particle ball would just be a boat anchor for me.

Phenom Unleashed 2, Rule GP2, Machine, Arsenal Angular, Xception 5.0.

That makes 5 out of 14 balls.

AMF Evolution Tour

Rotogrip Oracle
RotoGrip Rure Fuel (Pearl Particle)
Silver Streak Particle

The only one I use on a regular basis is the Evolution Tour, and it's been sanded and has a light coat of black magic polish on it.

The Oracle goes to tournaments with me when I think that there may be more than the normal house shot oil.

AMF Evolution tour, 2 AMF Terminal Velocity, Morich WMB, Hammer Big Deal.

I like Particle for anything from light medium to a flood.
I like them for the control. I also like them on a heavy
short shot with flying backends, kills it. 2cents
