How many people actually like bowling on Sport Shots?
« on: November 05, 2003, 10:31:31 AM »
Ok, tonight after leagues i bowled on a sport shot with a couple of friends for practice/pot bowling, and i enjoyed it.  I did this to see how my balls would react n stuff and how hard it would be.

I wouldnt say it was super tough, but i also know we wasnt using a actual PBA shot either, it was more of a modified PBA shot( C pattern ) I think.  I dont know why the reason is, cuz i didnt program it and dont work at the house.

But i do know it was still tough, but very score-able.  I was using a couple different balls like my X-factor and Reloaded, and Blue Thunder.  And found my best shot was with my Blue Thunder.

And thats basically cuz of the drilling, using a Axis Leverage, gave me a very mild reaction on the backend and allowed me to play a tight line 20-15.

I also found that with this drilling i had a bit of room maybe 1-3 boards and if i started the ball deeper, i wasnt in major trouble either, because the ball got threw the heads great and didnt go wild on the backend.

But anyways a couple of the guys who i bowl with are planning on bowling on a sport shot as much as possible and i can only wait to see what i do on a cake shot now!

I loved bowling the sport shot over the summer. I really made me focus more on accuracy which has paid off big time for me thus far.

bowled like hell on it, but I enjoyed it, learned a lot !  I've also heard that PBA patterns are not as tough as sport, that being said, I'd love to try one/any of those as well...........

I bowled on one over the summer and loved it.Didn't bowl real well, but realized how easy bowling has become.I'm president on  my friday league and changed our pattern this year to a 45ft pattern.I told no one and the funny part was how many guys complained how much oil was out there. My wife's team which has 3 women including herself, shot real good on it.The thing was they all adjusted to it, didn't complain made the adjustment.Their first games were their lowest, then everyone better from there. The old shot was a short pattern with very strong backends, anyone could hook the ball.I put something out so not everyone could get the ball to finish.I believe for one we need tougher conditions to get better, make accuracy important again, most people who bowl now a days don't want this they want to average 210 when they're only a 175 bowler, it just sickens me .I believe the abc should step in here ,  but with declining numbers that won't happen so we're stuck with the walls of china and such.

That's the thing the center i bowl in will put the shot down, no problem!!!!I just don't think i could fill the league.Next year  i'm going to try yo run one of the pba patterns and if people complain, screw them.I have 4 teams out of the 8 that wouldn't mind didn't ask the others. My wife has been bowling for 3 years she averages 170, she could care less what she averages. she says she just likes to bowl and would like something where she needs to be and learn accuracy. Not bragging up my wife, i just don't understand most bowlers.

I LOVE bowling on anything without a wall.  Flat pattern, reverse block, sport, PBA, you name it.  Zack's still around here somewhere, and I think he'll agree that a traveling youth tourney we bowled in last year put down some pretty tough shots at a couple of the stops.  I have had a sanctioned sport 700 (lol, although it was the last 3 games of the 4 game set), but the sport pattern it was on was NOT all that hard.  Too much oil inside, not enough outside (although it was in no way a wall), but it was sport compliant, believe it or not.  I REALLY wish there was a sport league around here somewhere.

Depends on the Sport shot.  Some places think that because there is so little taper, they have to put out very little oil -- say 20 units at max.  These shots are essentially impossible because the equipment destroys any shot put out within a very few frames and the shot becomes uncontrollable, even with urethane.  Longer, heavier patterns generally provide hold room, especially after a few shots, making it possible to score. Short, flat, light is just stupid hard and inconsistent.

I don't really care what kind of lane condition I bowl on, as long as my competitors have to bowl on the same condition.

PBA Patterns and Sport Shots are different things. And most sport complaint shots are a more difficult than PBA patterns A-E.

Don't know if this was a typo, but it certainly would explain the whining that seems to follow people that try to bowl on patterns that require shotmaking abilities

I wish that I had a sport-compliant condition to bowl on.  None of the houses in a city with a half-million people to draw from is willing to run a sport-compliant league.  We have a grand total of maybe 16 that were even willing to bowl in a scratch singles league.  I could care less about numbers...I want shots where if I miss, I pay a price but where if I execute properly, I get rewarded.  It is no fun to have to always start at 4th and 5th arrow with mild equipment drilled weak.  In the meantime, I guess that the line from The Graduate will continue to apply..."Plastics"

I've been bowling in sport league for 3 years and would never give it up.  Fortunately, it has grown every year although the quality of the bowlers has declined and that can affect the scoring.  A second house started a summer sport league that just finished its second season.  Averages are all over the place in that league and the pattern seems to be a little tougher.  In both leagues my average is easily 20+ pins below my typical house shot average.

I loved it... but my scratch league went back to what they call "modified" sport pattern, about a 4:1 ratio.  We bowl at an old wood house that the true sport shot really played difficult, and people wanted to ease it up a bit due to the declining league numbers.  My average is still 20 pins lower on this shot vs. the house shot in the same center, and I love it.

Jimsey,

I think many people would take exception to your statement about the "quality" of bowlers affecting scoring.  Especially since your house has produced some of the highest sport bowling scores in the nation.

I think it is important to encourage bowlers at every average level to embrace sport bowling.
