Poll: What Would You Do If....
« on: May 18, 2005, 02:28:20 AM »
A pro shop you walked into was selling Blems, 2nd's, X-outs, or a Variance without telling you that they weren't first quality or different from the Original Version?

Add on: What if this shop told you these balls were first quality knowing that they were 2nds in the first place? Some balls are not marked as Blems/2nd's or X-outs, but I know most are. So most recreational bowlers wouldn't know the difference.

Have any of you ran into this?

I've never run into it, but I think the answer is pretty simple.  Don't go there, and tell every bowler you care about to do the same.

I think that's fraud, especially if it's deliberate.  If you don't care about going back there, report them to the BBB or local AG.  In any case, call them on it.  If the drilling is satisfactory or there aren't other alternatives, I might buy balls online from someplace that can be trusted to send the requested equipment and only have the drilling done by the shop.

Under certain circumstances, I might return to the shop (i.e., it's the only shop for miles that's worth anything) but I'd be a lot more cautious about the equipment I bought.  I'd insist on weighing it for pin distance and top weight before drilling (other blems, like bad colors, are easy to see and, to me, not nearly as important).

I ran into this at an area house about 10 years ago, and is right down the street from Excaliber's bowling alley.

my recent purchases have been blems...
xception long pin
xtreme mid weight -it weighed at about 15lb 10oz

performs just like normal but for $60 bucks cheaper

a good proshop operator should disclose that information before making any kind of sale....

IF...and I say IF they didn't tell the customer they were X-outs, Blems, whatever, then I think they should be run out of town. Let the customer tell anyone and everyone they can about the misrepresentation of the balls they are selling.

A long time ago a business man said....Have one happy customer and they might tell a few friends....BUT, have one unhappy customer and they will tell the world.

In this case, that's what I'd to...tell the world.

Side Note...IF the proposal of USBC comes to pass, no weight holes...pin within 1", I'm not sure if I could buy a blem/X-out without seeing the ball. Some people will tell you it's a color blem, knowing well it's not and that's something I think will happen, if this crap passes, more than some are willing to admit.

I am NOT...NOT pointing any fingers at anyone, just making a statement. I have a friend who buys blems, and as stated above, they work great for him, all I'm saying is there will be some/a few that will sell blems/X-Outs knowing they will not comply with the new rules ( should they become law).

Wow, great responses guys.

Now here's another question for you guys...is there a way to weigh the ball to figure out how much top weight there is before drilling? The reason why I ask this is, some 2nds come with a top weight of up to 5oz.

If a dishonest seller sells a ball with that much top weight before drilling, is there a way someone could find out how much top weight it has by weighing it without having any of the specs handy?

Thanks!

Any real “Proshop” will have a scale and can

1)   Measure the gross weight.
2)   Measure the top weight.
3)   Find the true center of gravity (at least 10% are mis-marked)

And any good shop will balance a ball before and after drilling.

If they don’t have a scale or don’t know how to use it leave.

Pinbuster...my thoughts exactly. You know I've always wanted to learn how to weigh & balance a bowling ball. Next time I hit the shop, I'll ask my ball driller and see if he'll teach me how to do it!
