How much does drilling cost in your loc pro shops
« on: March 18, 2006, 02:50:36 AM »
Is the drilling incuded in the price of the ball or no?

If not, how much does it cost?

I'm wondering at a paticular new pro shop near me charging 50 dollars to drill plus 15 for a slug =65$ is a little excessive? Luckily I don't have finger inserts. I don't remember paying anything close to this high before.

It costs me about $60 for a full drill with grips and slugs, but i don't ever use a slug so it's $50 for me. I used to think that was high until I saw what people had to pay elsewhere. I used to see the balls available on the wall and they had a price of about $170 or so for the Ultimate Inferno and such. When I realized it included grips and a slug, I realized he wasn't trying to overprice...except on AMF balls. All of the AMF balls (it's an AMF house) are around $210 drilled, and that's all he recommends. We do have some good stuff on the wall that are well priced.

Well, the guy I have gone to for years will sit there and talk to you about your game, look at your current equipment, suggest what will improve your game based on your requirements.  One of the reasons I have been going there for years... and will continue to go there....

Also the reason I do not mind spending the few extra bucks... The customer service and knowledge is well worth it.

The other plus is that he doesnt try to push one ball or one line.  He has a huge selection, and give you different options based on MFG.  He suggests what works and what has worked for other people.  Who better to give you feedback on the products you drilled than the customers that are throwing them. - I dont think you can get that kind of feedback from an online guy...

Just my opinion

my pro shop man includes drilling in the cost of the ball---also included is several surface adjustments and several thumbhole adjustments. he charges $35 for a ball brought to him. he doesn't mind drilling balls brought to him as long as the customer realizes that the $35 only covers the drill----no advice, no surface adjustment, nothing else.

I get pretty much all of my stuff online. My shop doesn't necessarily like it, but understands that it's reality. I took two balls in that needed to be adjusted to my span, with new inserts and thumb slugs. I picked them up today and walked out for a total of $50. I think that's very reasonable. They had to plug the fingers in one and the thumb in the other, so it's not like there was no effort involved.

Hopefully it's the customer service side of things that drives most shops. Repeat customers (especially those that spread the "good word") can mean a lot of money coming their way...

Our store charges labor based on what you level of service you need.

Conventional drilling: 19.95
Fingertip: 39.95
Advanced Fingertip: 49.95

These prices are the same if you buy the ball from us or buy it somewhere else. We help our clients pick out the right ball and then help them get the right price. Our clients can purchase the ball from us or an internet site right from our store. They ship it to us and we drill it.

The modern pro shop is a service business not a retail store.

20 bucks(with inserts and slug) for me last time but i bring in some business for him and help him out with customers with their choices(with the inventory of the shop) when i have to wait when i walk in.  for balls in stock drilling is included.  when he respanned my grip(measuring and use of tools) it was more but that should be expected.

usually it goes in the fashion of:

i tell him how i want it drilled up.  he then tells me his history of that ball and what he sees with it.  i have him drill it his way.  rolls good.

Ok, after reading this I think the price of measuring and drilling should be no more then 30 not counting the inserts. I find 50$ to put some holes in a ball is totally ridiculous. I guess I will just go somewhere else. It's the principal of it that bugs me, and I have a choice of going somewhere else!

The shop that drills all my equipment if I buy the ball or take a ball in that has to be plugged and redrilled or a blank ball to drill he only charges me $15.00 including grips and thumb slug that is not the norm for his shop though but I have become vary good friends with him and I send him tons of customers that he also gives a discount to just because I sent them in there as long as they mention to him that I sent them in hes a great person and a great driller he is also one of the only shops that will allow me to go back in the area where he does all his work on equipment while he is drilling my equipment

It's interesting that I have seen NO responses from the guys that give great drilling advice on BR and run reputable businesses.

Guys like tekneek, Doug Sterner, JohnP, T-God, kotm, etal......what say you guys.  Like to know the real story not from some guy that has a drill press in his basement......doing it as a hobby.

Inquiring minds wanna know??????

bowl, there was an article on this very subject in bowlers journal international several years ago. the man who wrote the article advocated that if a ball was brought into his shop and it was purchased online or thru a catalog, etc., he would drill it the way the customer wanted. however, anything else cost extra. it makes sense to me. if you buy a ball from me i'll go the extra mile customer service wise. if you bring me a ball purchased somewhere else and you want it drilled, fine. but you're not going to get the extra service as if you purchased it from me in the first place.

Blank winds up being $45 with thumb slug, inserts and tax.  Seems to be pretty fair to me and he always throws in a few free games, and is great about adjusting things if they don't fit quite right.

He's a co-owner of the alley, and he's smart enough to see that me bringing in 6 balls over the past 2-3 months is way better than him selling me one ball.  Customer service wins repeat customers, and contrary to popular belief that is all that is going to let a bowling alley/ proshop stay in business in this day and age.

Yeah. You know, I had a guy in Jackson county. He had a little drum circle in his backyard. It turned into a drum circle four miles in diameter. You get a few hippies playing drums and next thing you know, you got yourself a colony.
