if i remember correctly, surface accounts for upwards of 70% of ball reaction. dont quote me on exact percent but it's up there

Surface is most important.  Layout mostly has to do with flare, and flare amount is directly related to how much fresh surface of the ball the lane sees.  More flare = smaller bowtie = more ball surface touching lane.

Surface, because it doesn't affect the flare, just affects the motion off the friction and where it starts to hook, which is the most important.

Surface also becomes rather trivial to change with a relatively small investment in a ball spinner (by hand is blister city except perhaps for touching up the last surface you had on the ball, or quick and dirty at the lanes) where as drilling for most of us means a trip to the PSO and costs a significant amount of the cost of the ball.

Actually, your release accounts for 80+ % of ball reaction.
