How to stop grabbing the ball?
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:44:17 PM »
Alright, as I've said probably a hundred times already, I'm just getting back into the game after a long layoff and I'm trying to break some old habits. One of those habits is grabbing/squeezing the ball. It's a habit I got into when I was having my thumbs drilled huge to allow for swelling when I was bowling 40-50 games a week in juniors. Now, however, I have all my thumbs sized to fit properly with enough room for one piece of white tape and I'm still grabbing the ball, which is no bueno. I'll try to post a video or two later because you can clearly see where the grab happens, but apparently my iPhone was drunk last night and thought it was upside down while I was recording.

Question of the day is: how do I stop grabbing the ball?

Shortening of the span in conjunction with a change in thumb pitches, perhaps forward.

See my thread entitled "Pro Shop Clinic Video," and watch at least Part 1.  What are your current specs?  I might be able to help you just based off hearing what your drill specs are.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Not sure what my current pitches are. Span hasn't been changed in 10 years, and I'd have to find my old spec sheet to see what my pitches are. I know nothing was changed when I had the thumbs refitted, but I don't remember my pitches off the top of my head.

I was having the same problem, but I also started spinning the ball as well. Went to the pro shop today to have someone watch me bowl, well after 3 games I got my release back and added 1/8 foward pitch to my thumb, I was at 0 reverse. I hope you get it figured out... Good Luck!

Definitely get refitted, we recommend doing that every 2-3 years just because people's hands change.  Important to use my fitting instructions in the video though.

Well I just had 3 balls refitted a month ago and we decided to keep the thumb pitch the same, but I don't remember off the top of my head what my pitches are. I had no choice but to get refitted if I wanted to start bowling again, I lost 70lbs since I quit 3 years ago and everything was huge.

Ok.  Well if it's an old habit, that's part of the problem, but I'm betting your pitches have something to do with it, maybe your timing too, maybe some excessive bevel, because that lets you get away with it.  Chances are though if you're still gripping, it's because you still feel like you need to.

It could be a lot of things, honestly. I know I have a ton of bevel, maybe it's too much after all. Maybe it's just a mental thing, who knows. I'm going to try to fix it with tape, because if use tape and grab the ball it's not coming off. There was a few shots where I did that the other night and didn't grab as much, but it still hung a little from squeezing it slightly.

The bevel will contribute to it more, because it lets your thumb socket slide forward and out of position, thereby making it so you HAVE to grip for the pad of your thumb to come in contact with the thumbhole.  Your thumb socket needs to be and stay directly above the thumbhole.  If your thumb is pulling out and forward, then trying not to grip it will be really hard.  Try reslugging one ball, shorten your span 1/16, go light on the bevel, and even without messing with your pitches, that should get you on the right track.  With your thumb properly inserted in the thumbhole, you should only be able to see your thumb socket.

You need to work on developing a feel for letting the ball roll off the palm and fingers rather than lifting.  I went to away pitches on my fingers, and forward pitch on my thumb in conjunction with a more relaxed span to accomplish this feel

Nobody knows if it's a bad fit or he's just a squeezer.  Everything said is pure speculation.  Some people have the best fit they could possibly have and grab it anyway.

Very true, still more information needed for a good answer.

In my case Gizmo is right I find myself squeezing the ball with only an 1/8 or zero reverse in the thumb I catch myself and relax my grip, then my release and arm swing comes back like it should it is an bad habit that I pickup long time ago.
