How to stop grabbing the ball?
« on: July 09, 2013, 12:44:17 PM »
Alright, as I've said probably a hundred times already, I'm just getting back into the game after a long layoff and I'm trying to break some old habits. One of those habits is grabbing/squeezing the ball. It's a habit I got into when I was having my thumbs drilled huge to allow for swelling when I was bowling 40-50 games a week in juniors. Now, however, I have all my thumbs sized to fit properly with enough room for one piece of white tape and I'm still grabbing the ball, which is no bueno. I'll try to post a video or two later because you can clearly see where the grab happens, but apparently my iPhone was drunk last night and thought it was upside down while I was recording.

Question of the day is: how do I stop grabbing the ball?

It takes a lot of work to stop grabbing even with the right drilling.  It took me 2 years to really learn a release where I didn't hit up or grab, and another 2 years before I could do it on a totally regular basis in clutch situations.

It's taking forever for my registration link from BBE to come through, so since I can't comment on there, I'll say here DON'T ADD REVERSE PITCH.  Very common old idea.  It actually makes you grip tighter throughout the entire back and forward swing, because with extra reverse, the ball doesn't just want to come off at release, it wants to come off during the backswing too, just physics and mechanics.  Extra gripping makes it harder to let go when you finally want to release it.  NO REVERSE!  Bowling is like everything else, there isn't a magical fix that's going to work right away effortlessly.  It's just like surgery, they have to cut on you and put you through a bit of pain to fix the problem.  Less bevel may hurt, may even cause a blister, but you'll stop gripping, and it will fix your problem.  Reducing your reverse pitch or adding forward may make you stick worse at first, but gradually you'll get adjusted to it.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Reverse pitch was predominant with under or palm lateral to aide in the release speed...today the variables are ball weight, steepness of swing and timing...the more muscle or pulling in the approach, the more opportunity for grabbing. The swing should 'swing (non-manipulated motion) under the shoulder and not be muscled into much redirection.
