White tape vs. Black tape
« on: April 18, 2014, 12:51:22 AM »
I have always used black tape in my thumb hole, but after finding some of it wasn't staying in the balls very well, I decided to try some white textured tape.  I really liked how much better the white tape seemed to stick inside the thumbhole, and the grip felt better too, as I required less of the white tape to get a good feel, but in my Wednesday night league, the white tape caused a pretty bad blister on my thumb, I thought about maybe covering the white with a strip of black tape.  Have any of you had these issues, and what type of thumbhole tape do you prefer?

I like tape, and I like about 4-6 pieces.  I only use the white tape.  1-2 pieces on the front of the thumb hole, and the rest on the back.  I do use the Vise Hada Patch precut tape on my thumb as well.  I like my thumb holes pretty tight, compared to most people.  That's just how I do it, it is up to personal preference really.  Some of the new tape is pretty rough texture wise.  A lot of the tape is made in the same place for the different companies.  That rough tape is taking some getting used to.

Just remember, tape is your friend, don't be afraid to change it out regularly, and keep your thumb hole snug, so you don't have to squeeze the ball to hold on to it, let the ball hold on to you.

I use Magic Carpet on the backside of the thumbhole and a couple of pieces of white tape on the inside (gripping side) of the thumbhole.  I usually will put one piece of black Frankentape on top of the white pieces so that only a small inverted U remains of the white for gripping.  The Frankentape is smooth and very thin.  It allows my thumb to exit the ball a bit quicker than just using the tackier white tape.

Experiment and see what works best for you.

2nd on the Magic Carpet and white tape. There was a point when I too used frankentape over white tape. But with the less amount of bowling I do nowadays, my thumb had shrunk  significantly. So MC (posterior) and 1 to 2 (anterior)  white tape is enough it get that snug fit and smooth release.
