Title: I have a real problem w/ my bowling alley!!
Post by: Ragnar on October 04, 2006, 02:00:28 AM
Happened again last night; I go to shot a 10 pin, stick at the line, hop to catch my balance, step on the lane and slip in the oil, landing on my butt.  Nearly happened on the other lane a bit later, but I was looking for it.  WHY CAN"T THE BOWLING ALLEY CLEAN THE APPROACHES SO THIS DOESN"T HAPPEN?  If it continues I"m quitting.  I'm sore all over today and getting really fed up.

That really sucks to hear...

What have the counter people said about it?  If they don't do anything at that point, then I would say is there another place you can go to?  There's a bunch of good places by me but only one has a really great approach for sliding.

Its common for houses to have a different feel in areas of their approaches that are not used as much as other areas.  I would suggest that you either go much slower in your attempts at the 10 pin (in this house) or move your 10 pin spare 5 boards (target and feet) or whatever it takes to get away from where ever the area is that is giving you problems.

Bowled in one house that was in very bad disrepair.  The approaches were synthetic, but they were like a quilt.  Made up of blocks of appraoch material.  And they were not all level.  Just happened that a raised seam was right on my 10 pin board.  Tripped over it for a game and then just decided to move away from that board totally to avoid injury.

Until someone sues them and wins (which are two different things) you probably won't be able to get them to change their maintenance routine.  And winning a law suit won't be easy since a lot of bowling alleys have a sign that says bowl at your own risk.  Not that a measly sign would help them if you were badly injured, but just move over a bit and hopefully you'll find a more consistent approach area.

Did you ever think the problem was your bad timing or bad shoes.Or the fact that most centers are suspect to a different slide consistency due to lack of activity in those areas of sliding. Most approaches do not need to cleaned just dry mopped.More often than not cleaning approaches equals bad news. And when cleaned distilled water should be used and distilled water only.

Rags, I learned a long time ago to walk up on the approach to where I intend to slide and check to see if I will stick.  That became part of my pre shot routine yrs ago.

One does have to time that action so as to not bother bowlers on either side of you.    After that becomes part of your routine, other bowlers will begin to expect to see you do that and it poses no problem.

If I find an area that will cause me to stick, I either go to the desk or page them and request they come and clean that area.   Thus far, I have never been refused.

Rag I am with you. Synthetic approaches are bad enough for me but then when I move to the corner to shoot a 10 I halt instantly. It has very little to do with the cleanliness of the approach but has to do with many bowlers sliding in a specific area and making that area more slippery.

I like to shoot the 10 sliding on the corner and looking at 23. But I fing on syntheics I have to slide 5 right of the corner and look at 20. I dont like it but I dont like sticking.

I have ordered some additional heals (made of leather) that should be delivered today that might help me with this problem for my dynaroo's. I will let you know.

For the record, I am a big guy, 260lbs and I apply a much larger force down when I slide. Anything remotely tacky completely destroys my physical game and I end up changing my timing completely to compensate. Adjusting my timing to a early timing helps me with sticky/tacky approaches.

slide sock...all leather heel...check the sides before we start,..no problems.
synthetic approaches were built for the centers not the bowlers,...they are the worst...be careful.

Because of the #*$(@*& synthetic approaches I have gone to Jim’s approach.

I use a slide sock with a red leather heel. I only take them off if the approaches are like ice.

I would rather slide too much than stick and be thrown forward.

I’ve been surprised that houses have gotten away with synthetic approaches. Plus many have seams deep on the approach that you can hang up on.

They are so inconsistent and a safety hazard. You would have thought some lawsuits would get them away from using them.

It appears you either have to change your game to plant at the foul line or go to a heel sole combination that will always slide.

But even then you get surprises.

Sawbones while I do what you suggest on synthetics they sometimes will change during the session and I hate to test slide everytime. You’ll slide fine one time and then stick/slip on the next shot in that area.

Brick, lol, but no.  I do always check the slide area that I use on my strike shots, but, until now, hadn't thought to check all across the foul line.  I'll not make that mistake again.  One of the problems is that the college league bowls just before us and there seems not to be enough time to oil and get everything else done in readiness for my league - so the approaches don't get cleaned.  I guess I should be happy that they oil.

My house got new management. They are extremely strict on clean approaches and even keep the gutters glossy, heh.

The difference in quality of experience is night and day. With that said, try to find out who's above the center's management and write them a well thoughtout letter about the job the center's management is doing. Try to get others to do the same.

One my centers does the same thing, I don't think they clean them once a month. At one end of the house you actually see coke stains at the start of the approuch. And this is a big seccessful center too, they just don't care.

Ugh.  It's depressing to read about bowling centers not caring about the people who play there.

Why aren't we successful?!!  Anyone?  Bueller?

I used to have lots of problems with approaches, either sticky, slick, or sticky/slick in areas.  Then about two years ago I bought my first Bowler/s Slide Sock (link below).  Now I don't even test the approaches before I throw my first shot.  I highly recommend this product.  I learned about it at a Senior PBA tournament where quite a few of the bowlers were using it.  Gary Dickinson gave me the web site address.  --  JohnP

Just bouught one. Unless I haven't worked the slide fibers enough to condition them, it doesn't make me slide any more than my Lind's EXXXTras with my homemade teflon cleats. I'll have to check in with Smash4-9 to see what he recommends.

Bob,

I hope you're feeling better this afternoon. Those falls can really hurt you. I don't check all along the foul line; a friend of mine has that problem: he'll slide fine for most of the area, but sticks badly when shooting 10 pins, sliding at the gutter edge.

Charlest

The best thing to do is to rub it into the carpet behind the bowler's area for about 4 or 5 minutes the first time you use it.  It's not going to be really slick  but will be consistent.  You should be able to go just about anywhere and the feel will be the same.  After a while it will become normal and you should not even notice any changes to the approach.  People ask what it is equivilent to 6,8 or 10 sole and the answer is all of them!  It should give the correct feel regardless of approach condition.  That is what makes it different than the flannel socks.  It maybe that it is equal to your home made solution but when you go to a different center it will adapt where the teflon will not.

PS... Thank you to everyone that uses the Bowler's Slide Sock

charlest -- What Smash49 said is exactly true.  I don't bowl very often on synthetic approaches.  But before I got the sock, every time I did I had problems, usually sticking.  In one pro-am tournament I hopped at the end of every shot.  With the sock, the first time or two I slide on a synthetic approach, it may feel a little different, but after two or three shots I can forget the approaches and concentrate on my game.  I have since bowled in the house I mentioned above and didn't have any problem.  --  JohnP

As common practice I would suggest that you start checking the approaches before league starts,I do this religiously simlpy because I dont want to look like a fool sprawled out in the middle of the lane

I take alot of personal offense at that statement.  I am 21 years old, been bowling and working in a bowling alley for 3 years.  I strip, dust, and oil the lanes and am personally responsible for their keeping as well as the approaches attached thereto.  I understand that dust accumulates and that it must be cleaned and taken care of.  I apologize for any "kid making $6.75" that doesn't understand what his job entails...but perhaps you should be more apt to pointing the barrel of your aggression towards the OWNERS who lacked the foresight to accurately train such "kids".  It isn't fair to be mad at people not doing the things they were never taught were necessary.  But hey, I'm biased I suppose.

By the way, I don't even make $6.75.

John,

Funny you should mention this. On the synthetics around here, I usually worry more about slipping, not sticking ... until recently. I think as they wear, they get nicks, like the synth lane surface gets nicks, making the surface rougher. Unlike wood, the synths can't be sanded down back to smooth.

I only tried the Sock for a few frames. I'll definitely try to break it in some more and try it for a more than a few frames.

Live and learn. Thanx!

Being that I work at abowling alley and hear all of thses complaints all summer, that the approaches are too sticky, I want you to think of this:

Summer, at least in my area means humidity, and with the synthetic approaches, this creates a big sticking problem.  The workers in the center can do nothing to help you.  Buffing the approaches results in the same problem, trust me, we did it.

And then, in the winter you will all be complaining that the approaches are too slippery.  Dont agree?  You watch.  When the humidty on a barometer drops to under 40%, you will be able to slide to the pin deck.

Personally, I am tired of complaints.  Every day i hear something in the summer, when its 95* out and 90% humidity.  Deal with it.  Why do you think Dexter has interchangable slide soles, along with EVERY OTHER SHOE MANUFACTURER?  They are meant to be changed for a reason.

Hey Charlest,

I ordered 'bowler slide sock' from Rob (Smash49) and have been using it for nearly a year now.  It's great!  Very consistent.  Just do as instructed to break it in (i.e. scuff/rub it on some carpet a few times).  I grew very tired of constantly changing the soles on my SST LX 6's and dealing with different approaches (i.e. left lane may be stickier than right and so on).  Must say, I haven't come across an approach the sock couldn't handle!  Good stuff!

BTW, do not, I repeat, do not bowl with it in 'OOB' condition!!!  Like stepping out the shower on marble floors = OUCH!!!

Rags I am really glad that you didn't fall as that would have had far reaching effects. With you being such a large person and living in an earthquake zone it would have triggered at least a 6.5 which in turn could have led to a tsunami which would have killed millions. charlest -- When I first got my sock, it did take about two or three games for me to get used to it.  I scuffed it on the carpet as the instructions say, but when I slid on it the first time it seemed slick.  About three games later I had gotten used to it.  After a year I turned it inside out and went through the scuffing again.  When I slid on it the first time, it felt great.  After another year I bought another one, and it was the same as when I turned the first one inside out.  So it was just a matter of me getting used to a little easier slide than with the sole of my Linds Customs.  --  JohnP
