overblock or simply THS?
« on: December 21, 2003, 09:16:29 AM »
Our league oil pattern has been different this year than it was in the past.
In the past, it was pretty forgiving -- good ole THS.  Now, we seem to have an much more extreme wall starting just inside 10. If you miss right one of 2 things is likely to happen: the ball crosses over and you hope for a brooklyn or the ball rolls out and you get a washout.  Sometimes you get lucky and the ball actually hits the pocket.  We usually have plenty of oil in the middle and I seem to have much better luck/consistency playing a deeper inside line with my Swamp Monster or SmashR and trying to avoid the wall.  For the last couple weeks, it's been a little dryer in the middle.
Based on my description, would this be an overblock condition?  I suppose some would consider overblock to be kind of the same as THS.  It's definitely not as forgiving though.

The other thing you can do is ignore the arrows and aim where you want your ball to bounce off the hard wall.  Just make it to the dry or you'll miss the head pin.  I'd rather play the oil as well, but it's another option.

bigfoot,

sounds like a good old fashioned wet/dry to me; if you're a Bones' styled "flinger", this can give you grief. This pattern is where you have 3 basic choices for balls and several choices of delivery modifications to deal with it.

Balls:
1. Use very mild resin like the Rot-Grip Sonic-X or DynoThane Barrage to play a normal shot going out into the dry,
2. As strider said, use a strong oil ball and keep it inside the dry area the whole path to the pocket,
3. Use a control ball like the old Lane#1 Pro Purple or Viper, Storm Bolt Pro, Columbia red Pulse, Visionary Purple Ice, etc to play your normal shot. These smaller hooking, control-style balls do not react violently off the dry nor do the over-skid on the oil.

Deliveries:
1. Throw it faster and with less revs (and maybe more rotational axis) to reduce your normal backend,
2. Throw it with more of an end-over-end, to achieve the same purpose as #1,
3. However else you choose to make a more controlled release.

Or even combine balls and delivery style.
