PBAX Help
« on: April 26, 2010, 11:11:42 AM »
A little help from PBAX bowlers.  I'm preparing to bowl in one for the first time.  My dilema is that I only own 2 balls, a Bedlam and Total Bedlam.  Each one are setup pretty similar, skid/flip.  What patterns are these best for and what might be a good complement for the other patterns.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dont worry about what balls you have just yet. You should be doing 2 things Making sure you can play the middle of the lane if you need to, and shooting straight at spares with your plastic ball.

Yeah, brains first, new balls second. Too many people have that in reverse, but never get to the second part!

Just try to vary the 2 you have so you have different looks.
I suggest to study up on the shots, learn about them, where they typically play, etc. On youtube, Chris Barnes has a few videos talking with other prs on how they play the various conditions. It's not an exact science, so use the info as a guide.

yeah I have been doing a little bit of research so far.  I'm excited about the opportunity to see where I stand with my game.  Does anyone know any good website to help educate myself about the various patterns.  I went to the PBA website and also have watch a few videos on youtube.

Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!  Definitely leave with something learned.  I'll be in my first X league since 2004 soon myself.

Don't always go by what they say on the videos.  So much of where you need to play depends on your lane surface and the people you are bowling with.

Also, make sure you lower you axis tilt a little.  The more even you can make your reaction the less trouble you will get in.

Agree'd 100%.. The lane surface that the pattern is on and how well the machine strips and lays down the pattern will be a defining factor. It's ok to get an idea of what the patten "MAY" be like but don't try to force a shot to work just cause the pattern is "supposed" to be played that way.  You will waste many shots and many pins trying to make something work that isn't there.
Just look for where the friction is. The patterns will play from the end of the pattern.. not to the outside like a house shot.
Toss one up 5, 10 and 15 and see which one gives the best look .. then adjust speed, breakpoint, and release to fine tune the path to the pocket.

That''s pretty solid advise. Unfortunately Lane machine''s are pretty complex and are often not working properly. There are so many things that can go wrong with out anyone knowing except the bowler. you can''t just walk up to the foul line and look at the lane and say Oh ok this is cheetah, or highway to hell, or oh cool its a ths. You can however tell almost instantly if a said pattern is not playing close to where it should be. As stated above, no matter what you think you are bowling on, ALWAYS go in with an open mind. Good luck to you.
