When facing carry down....
« on: September 14, 2017, 07:26:05 AM »
My Thursday night league is on the small side, which means we face teams several times during the season.  A few of the teams are there for recreation only aka not serious bowlers.  These recreational teams mainly use house balls which can create a carry down transition.

If you know you will be dealing with carry down at some point during a league session, how do you decide what to throw?  Do you start with your benchmark and then "ball up" when you start notice the transition or do you just start with the stronger ball?

No question, start with your benchmark, than ball up as needed (alone get with deciding what area to play off of the carry down).

Learn to square up, and play the carry down like a long pattern.  I like strong pearls.  If you try to find something to over power the carry down you will get inconsistent results.

Burn up the gutter then ball across to a ball more responsive off the friction.

On league shots when bowling against bowlers who use plastic balls..!!
I normally use a more rolly ball, short pin to pap and try to bowl around their line as they normally bowl straighter and should not affect the outside 10 lines.. which in turn can help as their ball carrydown can cause good hold.
If that is not so or outside is OOB, step inside and treat the pattern as a long shot...!!!

This is usually my strategy too.

Unless the carry down is awful (like, bowling after a weekend of open play with no re-oil bad), I prefer to CORE up without taking a big step up in cover. I don't want the ball to burn up in the fronts or overreact off of non-carried down boards, I just want the ball to roll heavier while keeping a similar look.

As an example, my current go-to combo would be a Hustle INK(OOB) up to a Code Black (@4000). There's SLIGHTLY more surface and cover there, but not enough that it takes me out of the zone I'm playing.

Sounds just like the Thur league my team joined. Looking to try a different house we moved and the league is small with a couple teams who are truly rec bowlers using plastic. House tends to be dry with a bit of OOB outside 5. Used pearl SkyRocket to begin and switched to shiny Haywire last nite with decent results. Playing a 15 to 8 line when making good shots about 1/2 through game 2 a little carrydown definately developed and the Haywire was able to power through it.
