Title: If money were no object...
Post by: 700Virgin on February 26, 2008, 10:41:00 PM
...what shoes would you buy?  I've been saving pot money all year and definitely need a new pair.  I previously bought Brunswick Zones, because they were cheap, and now they are cracked all over the place.  I have never had a pair with interchangeable heels/soles.  Is it really a big deal or does a slide sock accomplish the same thing?

I am looking at the Dexter SST7E but want to know if they are worth the $$.  The best price I found online was $125 with no shipping.  Anyone know what they are going for at Nationals?

Thanks in advance.

Uh.... The ones I have.  A good pair of bowling shoes are the most common thing bowlers overlook.  If you can't slide or can't stop, you can't throw good shots.

Tour Ultras, hands down.  If you don't need 3G-labeled shoes to bowl PBA tournaments, you can get by with the Dynorooz version (same shoe, different name).  If that is the case, send a PM to tekneek, he's got 'em on sale right now.

I have the older ABS tour ultras and I like them a lot, but have had problems breaking in the heels.  Best shoe I have ever had was a pair of custom Linds.  They lasted forever and had a great slide.  Only problem was the sole wasn't interchangeable.  I know Linds has an interchangeable sole now, but not sure on their durability of late.

I know I didn't suggest anything, but rest assured, any shoe you chose will be better than what you have now.  All top-of-the-line shoes have plusses and minuses so it depends on what means most to you.

I just upgraded from SST7's to 3g Tour Ultra's.  Hands down the Tour Ultra's are better shoes!

i just bought a pair of dexter sst6 se's. all i can say is wow. they fell amazing and are more comfortable than some street shoes.  the interchangeable soles really come in handy some times.. imo i think there worth the couple extra bucks.

like mentioned before if you cant slide right, your not going to throw good shots.

There are good deals on ebay with Brunswick shoes (made by dexter). They are the same as the SST 5's I believe, interchangable heels and soles, somewhere around $75-$80 shipped.

Tekneek from this site also has some outstanding deals on some Dynoroo's. Message him, or look for his offer in the for sale section.

the only choice would be 3G's tour ultra's. made from kangaroo leather which is at least twice as strong as cowhide and much more supple, these shoes have top notch quality and construction. they come with an almost limitless variety of slide sole and heel combinations and are comfortable from the get-go.

Another vote for the Tour Ultra's.  I have the older ABS as well.  Very comfortable and durable-hardly show any signs of of use in 4 1/2 years of bowling at times several times a week.

3 Shoes are top of the line:
3G (no longer Dynothane) Tour Ultras
Dexter SST 7 SE
Brunswick Classic

All of these will offer multiple options for soles and heals, with money not an option, 3G would probably be the top of the top of the line.  It cost the most but this shoe has more options and more accessories than the other two. Accessories include: A cleat sole with cleats, Shoe Horn, Shoe Carry-All, Slide Sole Cover, Form Keepers, and a Cleat Pick.    The shoe also has Kangaroo leather. Have you ever felt of a Kangaroo?  Well, neither have I but the Kangaroo leather is the most comfortable.   Also, interchangeable toe cap.

If money were an issue though, I would probably go with the Brunswick.  Its the best deal.  The Brunswick is made by Dexter and is basically the same as the SST 6 & 7 but less expensive.  Comes with plenty of options on soles and heals, accessories such as a shoe cover, shoe bag and individual bags for slides and heals.

I'll say the Tour Ultra's are the best too.  I've had the Tour Ultra's for over a year now and haven't had anything go wrong with them.  I had the Dexter sst 6's and they fell apart after just a couple of months.

if you dont drag your toe like i do i would say tour ultras, if you do i would go with sst7s b/c they have the toecap and hold up better, but as for comfort nothing beats ultas just wish they held up to be dragging my toe.

SST7 SE for $129.00 free shipping.

I've never tried the 3G/Dynorooz but the SST's are the most comfortable pair of bowling shoes I've ever owned.  If none the less, it seems to me like with all brands, the more expensive better quality adjustable shoes are MUCH more comfortable than their cheaper counterparts.

i like my pair of dexters.  they were only 37 but they are still working great for me.  they dont have the interchangeable stuff but  i dont see any point in them.  I mean i get tired of lookin at the same pair of shoes after years anyway so if i keep getting ones for around 35 and they mess up every couple of years then...im ok with it.

Ok - the consensus is the Tour Ultras.  I looked at the link provided and saw there are multiple Tour Ultras.  Are the different names just to separate the release year, or are they noticeably different.

Second question - be realistic - how often would you use all the different heels and soles that are included???

Third question - does anyone know if these are cheeper at Nationals or lon-line.  I can check on-line prices, but have no idea what they are selling for in Alb.

Thanks for all the comments!

lowest prices:

buddiesproshop.com..........$145.95

bowling.com.................$138.99

blockbusterbowling.com......$149.95 + shipping

allstarbowling.com..........$145.50

bowlingball.com.............$136.99

these are just some examples of prices. you'll probably only use one set-up of soles and heels the majority of the time but it's worth having a selection of both especailly if you bowl in different houses or bowl tournaments.

Footwork is the foundation of bowling (that's a famous line of a friend of mine) and I wouldn't go anywhere without my Dexter SST 6's. (The women's Tour Ultras are too ugly for me to consider buying them... I don't care how comfy they are)

I dont use any of the heals and soles other than the S8 sole and S7 heel (dexter).  What I have done though, is get 2 spares of each sole and heel, that way if someone accidentally spills soda in the floor and/or I step in something and start sticking I can simply take off the dirty ones and put clean ones on of the exact same feel.  This way I don't get yelled at for easy slide on my shoes trying to slide again (which I was guilty of in the past in similar situations), and I can confortably continue bowling while I clean off the dirty ones and get them ready again.

I use the Lind's Exxxtras and have for years. This is actually my second pair, but I still use the originals too. I bought the second, did not like the slide so I sent them up to Wisconsin. Jeff Lind called me himself and discussed my slide concerns, recommended a sole for the conditions I was looking for and put a new sole on my shoe. That is service you can not get anywhere else but Linds.

I also own a pair of Dexter SST5's that I have glued back together twice and they have less than 100 games on them. That is the problem with Dexters I have seen and heard. Expect to buy a new pair once a year, every other if you are lucky and don't bowl much.

The Tour Ultra's I have not heard anything bad on either. Everyone I know loves them and they have the fully adjustable soles. And yes that is a big deal if you bowl in mulitple centers and tournaments. If you only bowl in one house and league, probably not that big a deal.

Thanks for all the input.  Ordered the 3G Tour Ultras yesterday from tekneek.  Had a really hard time finding them since I wear a 13.  Tekneek stepped to the plate and ordered them for me.  I called two of the on-line places.  Neither had any idea when they may get them in.  Tekneek OFFERED to order them for me.  Should see them in a few days, and am very anxious to try them.

After 35 plus years of bowling, I have never had a 'quality' pair of shoes, and just last Friday converted to 'spot bowling'.
