My Bowling Vitals - What's This Mean to You?
« on: March 09, 2015, 04:32:13 PM »
Hey BR Nation,

This is for my fellow bowling eggheads out there.  I just got my bowling 'vitals' from a very recent lesson, and would love to hear what this means to YOU guys.  If you had these vitals, what would you recommend for types of layouts? Types of balls? Surface preps?  Etc. etc.

Speed: 17.5-18 at the pins
Revs: 320
Axis Tilt: 20*
Axis Rotation: 75*

A video is worth a thousand words.
…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Now...if a picture is worth a thousand words, and video is just a slew of pictures in a row, would a video be worth (number of frames)*1000?  :P

I'll work on getting the video from my coach and start a YouTube channel.

What that looks like to me is characteristics similar to Pete Weber outside the ball speed.  Pete has a lot of axis rotation, a low end tweener, with about 15 mph at the pins.  I notice on TV he uses a lot of pin down layouts.  I have seen him use pin up but I would venture to say most of what I have seen from him; the layouts have been pin down I am assuming to help control the backend with that much axis rotation.  Another thing I have noticed about him on TV is that he tends to stay with symmetrical cored balls (IQs, Rocket, Optimus, Hyroad).

Now for you; a lot depends on the lane condition you are on.  With your faster ball speed and combine that with your axis rotation; I would think balls with a little surface and earlier rolling would work best for you.  Balls like the Black Widow Legend, Gamebreaker 2, Disorder, and IQ Nano just to name a few could work well.

That is my suggestion solely based on numbers without actually seeing you roll the ball.  I am sure with a video that some suggestion could change.  But believe based on seeing what stuff Pete tends to use; that you could do something similar in regards to balls and layouts to what he uses and is successful with.

with those numbers you are speed dominant high axis rotation medium/high axis tilt. you would get better results generally with earlier rolling layouts and balls to make sure the ball doesnt skip the breakpoint as well as control backend motion once the ball starts the hook phase

Biggest thing that jumps out at me is the high axis rotation.  It can be very effective, but also very condition specific.

just FYI....post like this can be seen has trolling. your comment has nothing to do with the OP question.  you're a newbie so you get a pass...don't post just for the sake of posting...

Plus, it's best you hear it from me and not from others who can be rather blunt in a not so nice way...

As mentioned above, earlier rolling balls may be best.  Need to burn some tilt and rotation.  Plus, a control layout will smooth out the reaction.  It depends on your axis point measurement, which you didn't list, but the pin under the bridge area on a solid coverstock might be what I would try first.
