Injuring a groin during bowling...
« on: December 09, 2003, 09:49:11 PM »
A good many years ago, about seven that I can remember of I was practicing in the evening when out of no where I seriously tore my groin muscle.  It was during the slide, and happened at the exact same time of the release.  The pain was excruciating, and I could barely walk after that.  That injury took me out of bowling for two months or so, because it would "rip" again until it fully recovered.

If anyone on this site suffered a similar injury, could they describe how they figured it happened?  I can't put it together enough times in my head where it makes sense.  After going over and over my actions that day I can't think of anything I did to tear it like that.

The reason for this post is after long blocks of bowling, say about ten games worth my groin/hamstring gets sore.  Even two Sundays ago at a Turkey Shoot I pulled it again, making finishing terribly difficult.  Even though it wasn't as bad as the first time, it still puts a damper on my bowling, and continues to do so after reaggrevating it.  At least this time around, I have an idea of how it happened, but can't back track enough to figure it out.

Does anyone know what I could do to prevent "re-injury" or keep it strong during longer blocks of bowling?

Not very deep, about a 45 degree angle, considering if your thigh was perpendicular to your shin forming a 90 degree angle.

APK,

WHile you are young, unfortunately you are getting a (bitter) taste of what getting old means. Dadgummed injuries take freaking forever to heal.

The only thing you can do is to let it rest to heal itself. I don't think it is ripped; might be much more painful if it were, but I'm no doctor. Maybe Bones can help on that issue.

Until you are 100% certain that it is healed, I would, if I were you, not bowl 10 games at once. (Heck, after 2 games Monday, you felt some ache/pain. Remember?) I had a groin pull several years ago and it eventually healed.

FYI Phillip Marlowe (here) had one several months ago. If he doesn't chime in, message him.

One last thing, this does point up the importance of stretching and warm-up before bowling, even for not-old (trying to be polite here) adults. That will drastically reduce the number of such injuries. One of those stretches is for the inside groin muscles area. This is a SPORT, the way you and many others play it.

I pulled a hamstring.

I basically stuck in my slide with a deep knee bend at the time.

With it being a groin, I would venture to say that you were going into your
slide, and your pushoff foot slipped.  I have had this happen on fast approaches.

Doing a few streches beforehand would work.

APK,

What are your stretching habits? I'd like to know. I stretch before and after bowling any kind of block. First of all, you get a loose swing. Also, since bowling is an actual sport... tearing and over-stretching of muscles can occur. By stretching your muscles, especially your legs, you can possibly prevent more injury from occuring.

The same exact thing happened to me early in the season last year when bowling in a new house.  Apparently, I had been used to somewhat "tackier" approaches where I wouldn't slide very much.  On my 2nd practice shot, I hit something (powder off someone else's shoe?) on the approach and my controlled slide ended up in a near "splits".  Sorry, no amount of stretching (unless you can do the splits all of the time) would have prepared me for that.

To answer your question I barely stretch, which I know is bad.  Even then I do it only if my body feels/felt tight.

I think I remember somewhat how it happened, during the slide in the Turkey Shoot I left my trailing leg on the ground.  For some reason if I drag that leg even by accident it re-aggrevates the muscle.  I thought I had it taken care of but I made a subconscience mistake somewhere.

I will take all your advice and stretch properly before and after bowling to see if it helps any further.

Yeah,

If you are dragging your trailing leg it is the same as it slipping on pushoff.
you are streching the groin area when you do that.

I've caused a mild pull when I was trying to throw the ball extremely hard perhaps a year ago. I had increased my foot-speed quite a bit, and actually hurt the side of my trail leg as it swung around too hard. Go figure.

Pin_Nut,

The problem I face isn't as bad as that was, it's isolated in the groin muscle.

I actually got checked for both types of hernia and other muscle tears but they showed negative.

I mentioned the muscle "ripping" because that's how it feels in my leg when I injure it.

My actual injury was in the same place (left groin), but there were effects that extended beyond just the groin/inguinal area.  It actually hurt for a long time from my abdominals to my knee all down the left side.  The actual tear itself was in the groin, and I still have a lump in the crease of my leg which is likely a solidified lump of blood that is trapped inside of the torn muscle.

My injury occurred in August 2002, but I still have lingering effects to this day.  Now before I bowl, I always stretch, especially my legs, groin, and abdominal region.  People sometimes laugh at the fact that I stretch before I bowl, but if they really knew how much that injury hurt, both mentally and physically, they would understand.

Best wishes in your recovery.
