No finger inserts
« on: March 07, 2014, 10:06:48 AM »
I have noticed more and more people talk about how they have switched to no inserts, and I am curious as to why? Are there benefits to no inserts?

I switched because the grips tear my fingers up in longer formats.  I tried it most of this season and lost tilt, which in turn made carry go away.  I actually switched back to grips last week and noticed difference right away, but again my fingers tear up a lot more with grips

It's just feel or preference.  I gave up inserts many years ago and never looked back.  I used to hit up on the ball a lot with inserts, so for me no inserts means a cleaner release.  Another benefit is no more maintenance and cost for replacing inserts.  If you buy a lot of used balls, inserts might save you the cost of a full plug and re-drill, but unless you span and pitches are almost identical and you like the existing drill pattern, it still might not save you anything.

IMO, no grips allow you to get the ball into the lane much cleaner than with grips. I haven't used grips since 98, and would never go back to grips. There was a learning curve with them (first ball I did, I was so worried about my fingers that I beveled the crap out of my fingers. Now, I use no bevel at all.) Try it and see.

I'd like to try and sample the feel of having no inserts. And if I like it, it'll be very costly for me to have several balls to plug and re drill at around $25 to $35 for each. That's like about $200.

Also, I have semi oval fingers, how do you make it feel snug?

I personally use some of that Master rosin or blow some warm air into the fingers.
