Anyone throw Bonanza?
« on: December 27, 2008, 03:04:23 PM »
I was looking on eBay and a local distributor is selling a whole boat load of Bonanza equipment.

Some of them they have labled "Bonanza Red Beast" and some are not "Bonanza Blue Reactive".

Does anyone or has anyone thrown these?  I know they're "supposed" to be just like the original releases, but really, how close are they?

Also how can someone tell what ball is what is all they say is Bonanza on them?

Thanks for the help!

You don't know for sure. The distributor is told by the factory and the retailer is told by the distributor. They are good balls just don't match up to quality standards or blem standards or they use left over blocks with different covers. I have 3 of 1 particular ball.I don't know for sure what they are but they hook a bunch and hit well. These are for sale Cheap!!!!

They are all regular Bonanza's so they are USBC legal.  I am tempted to snatch up a Red Beast and maybe a Beast and maybe a C Beast and maybe a Beast Master hahaha.

I guess if they don't know for sure what they are though....

In the past going back to the 1970's I had tried some Bonanza's, Hurricanes, Regency's etc... For the most part they were okay. Some companies today call them 2nds, x-outs, x-blems, pro cg's, pro pins, and they stamp the regular name on them.

They get the Bonanza label when they aren't good enough to be labeled as a 2nd or blem. A bonanza is worst than a 2nd and the company doesn't want their name on the ball.

That's what I've seen and heard about the Bonanza balls.  The markingings on some of them are not true and when you drill them you should weigh them first.  Bonanza'a are worse than X-outs, blems and seconds. Cheap is not the word for them!  I know that they can be had for less than shipping cost from time to time.

Hmmm...interesting.  I threw and drilled some Bonanza white dots in the late 70's and early 80's when there were still no cores other then the pancake.  So other then cg off, color off or label misprinted, what else could be so wrong?  I never knew this, I thought at the time they were just seconds.

I also had a Brunswick Manta (second, blem, x-out..etc) that was called Nova back then and if I remember correctly, it was Nova because it was slightly discolored...interesting.

From my experience with Bonanza balls the biggest problem is not long pins, color imperfections, etc., it's if you measure them they have smaller circumferences than normal. You hear them bang as they come up old Brunswick ball returns and have some that don't return every time after they are thrown. There is an old story about Don Carter and a favorite ball he used on the tour. He wanted another one as his old one was showing a lot of wear. They drilled a new one but he couldn't carry nearly as well with it. They weighed it and found nothing wrong. When they measured circumference, the old one was smaller. It turned out the old one being smaller kept the pins lower and increased carry.

thats because the manufactures sand the labels off the blem balls then label them as bonanzas.

i have had 2 and i like mine alot. i had a 298 in league and a 300 in practice with a bonanza version of a track emb solid. my new one is a whiplash solid and they are both very rolly balls that suit my game nicely. i wonder if the older simpler cores are the reason i like them. if you are talking about glc on ebay they are great to deal with.

I still have a few Bonanza Yellow Dots new in the box that I traded for.  I keep them just for me otherwise I will not sell seconds, x-outs, blems, Bonanzas in our shop.  Just the fact that you are not completely sure what you will get. Quality is important to us over just making a buck. We want our customers to be confident and satisfied with their purchases.  I did buy a bunch of Trop Storm x-outs from Lomar years ago and hated the hassles of them.  They had 8 or more inch pins etc.  After that purchase no more and we learned.
