Petersen Point System?

I have bowled in or seen advertised a number of leagues that use the "Petersen Point System."  However, each leagues point system seems to vary some what.  Can anyone explain the true Petersen Point System?

I'm not 100%, maybe someone will chime in with a positive answer.

The ones I've bowled in were 4 man teams.  First game was team, second game we split into 2 doubles teams, and the 3rd was singles.  Therefore, you had one point for the team, 2 points for doubles and 4 for singles.  7 possible points out there for the night.

I liked this format very well because you (or another team mate) could have an off night and not lose every point because of it.  Also, it was more fun breaking off into the doubles and singles - just the change of pace I guess.

we use peterson points in are league and we go as follows
if you have 10 teams and you bowl the highest set of all the teams in the league for that game you get 10 points if you bowl the 2nd highest you get 9 and so on and so on, then for totals whoever had the most totals would get 10 and the same as above

Does anyone know where this point system originated?  There was this little crappy bowling alley in my old neighborhood back home.  The place had to have been there forever. We all just knew it as Petersen's, and above the door in old tile it said "Home of the Petersen Classic."  I know that bowlers from all over the country came there to bowl at one time and though it was small and dingy it had the rep of being a house that separated the men from the boys.  The place had no triangles on the boards, so everyone had to count boards.  Does anyone know if that's where the point system came from? Once bowling there while I was in high school my ball crushed a roach that had decided to crawl across the lane. Ecch.

seems there are many versions of peterson points systems, so here is ours. we bowl trios, 4 games, 2 two game sets. you get one point for your match point, 3 for the game, total of 6 so far for each game or 12 for the set. then add in what you team bowled for series for the 2 games. if you bowled 600 and 650 that would be 12.50 points. add that to the 12 you won for the games and you'd have 24.5 for the first set. combine that with the second set and you have your points for the day. the thing i like about this is that you can bowl really well and if you still get beat for your match points or game at least you still get something out of the set instead of a zero. granted you still have to get your game and match points to do well but on those days when you are a little bit off at least you still get something.

Thanks for the replies.  I was away for the weekend and just had the opportunity to read them.

I agree that there are now many "versions" of the Petersen/Peterson point system.  From what I am gathering, the original system included points based on the individuals/teams total score and for winning the game/match.  This does even it out a bit on those occasions when a bowler/team is on the losing end of a high scoring game/match while others are winning with much lower scores.

I did find out that the Petersen Classic is still running, though it has moved to one of the upscale suburbs.  Apparently this year is the 93rd annual.  Still can't find much else about its history, or the development of the points system.
