Internet vs pro shop prices
« on: November 29, 2019, 01:05:01 PM »
Hey guys,

How much does your driller charge?  It and finger grips is $65 for internet ball.  But since internet charging tax now, a little less than ten percent in California.  I might as well buy balls from pro shop since price is same.

How about you guys?

Thanks

The information you get from you ball driller is more valuable and also supports them by buying direct through them. They would also handle any warranty claims instead of you having to go back to the place you bought it from.  Pro shops usually charge between $80 to $115 depending on grips and/or interchangeable thumbs.

If you are in California and your driller only charges $65 with an IT and finger inserts tell him to raise his prices.

Just another pro shop that needs a lesson on the costs of doing business.  It’s ok to own a business and not order off the value menu every day or drive a 15 year old civic.

I disagree. That price is very fair to me and most places I've seen are around that price. $60-75 range

Idol for my wife— $250 out the door including thumb slug, finger inserts and 5.5% sales tax.  What would a drilled online price be?

If a pro shop installs your grips and slug for the same price as a blank drill they are just plain dumb. It’s 3 times more work to install a slug than to drill a thumb hole.

Buddies has Idol for $115 (great deal imo, finally got me one).  $175 tops for drill and inserts (dont use slugs)

(edit: Soniq for $80 is pretty amazing to)

At the shop I'm using now, pricing is ala carte, so it doesn't matter if you buy the ball there or not, drilling fees are the same.

$50 for drilling, $10 for a custom drilled thumb slug, and $5 a piece for finger inserts.

$70 total. And it ALWAYS fits.

I cant say I don't buy online, cause sometimes I do, but lately its only been hard to find stuff he cant get anymore, or something so crazy cheap you cant pass it up.

 Otherwise, I buy from him.

My local PSO also does the a la carte style pricing, drilling is always $60 for finger tip, and inserts are extra. He doesn't mark up the bowling balls at all, just charges his cost + the previously mentioned items.

Due to the ball companies releasing so much equipment all the time, he tells most of his regular customers to buy the balls online if they can find them at a good price because it'll be cheaper to him, he won't have to deal with the inventory, and most of us know what we want, and aren't coming to him for ball advice anymore. Works out for everyone then.

I hear you. The shop actually encourages me to buy stuff online if I find crazy good deals he cant match. He makes the same on drilling them, plus does NOT have to deal with inventory and distributors to do it.

P.S. Just went yesterday and drilled up a hyper cell fused he had in his N.O.S. bin. $129.95 + tax for the ball. Throw in drilling (discounted for black friday pricing), and I walked out the door for $160. (Well, I did also buy his lunch too, lol!)

Feel like I got a great deal, love my relationship with the guy (more than just a shop guy to me, but a personal friend as well), and he makes em fit like a glove, EVERY time.

As long as he's doing it, I know where I’ll be going.

Preface to say I don't sell a ton of volume during the year compared to some places and I have zero overhead so my pricing may be a little lower than others.....But...

Here are two quick stories in regards to pricing:

1.  Older lady wants a plastic ball.  I sell them for $90 plus tax drilled conventional.  She asks what the charge would be for her to buy online and have me drill it.  I charge $40 for conventional drills on plastic.  "That's really expensive"  was her reply.  Most online shops sell plastic for $53 or so she may save $2.99 by purchasing online.

2.  Another customer asks me for a price on a Statement Solid.  My price is $209 plus tax with drilling and grips included.  Thumb inserts extra.  He says he found one online for $119.  Ok my friend buy it online and I'll drill it for you and you'll save some money.  "I don't like to buy online, I don't know why your price is so much higher" he says.  Now with that specific product I'm sure some online places are trying to unload them, my distributor price is still the same as it was (as of yesterday).

I tell people all the time to buy online and in some cases to wait 2 months after a product comes out and you're guaranteed to find them cheaper.  I'm going to make the same amount of money whether you buy it from me or buy it online.
