Favorite position on your team?
« on: November 27, 2016, 01:23:01 PM »
Which position do you prefer to bowl in, and why? My favorite position is lead off because I like to feel like I am (pardon the pun) getting the ball rolling in a close game. Build the team's momentum to clench the win.

I'm the anchor in both leagues I bowl in and I love it.  I'm always matched up against the other teams best bowler which increases my focus and concentration. Sure there is more pressure, but I like being the one my team counts on every week.

I joined a team last year and am now in my second year on the team.  (I've only been bowling four years).  I was plopped into the 2 hole, presumably because that's where the person I replaced bowled.  I like it and do well there.  I think the only spot on the team where I would prefer NOT to bowl is lead-off.

For the record, our line-up is a little strange.  Our highest average leads off.  I currently have the second highest and am in the aforementioned 2-hole.  Third highest is anchor.  But we do pretty well (currently in first place; finished second last year).

I was in a shootout league this summer.  Bowled anchor a few times.  Kind of liked it.  It really made me focus and want to step up my game when matched up against a top bowler on the other side.
Current bag:
DV8 Turmoil 2 Pearl
Radical Squatch hybrid
Motiv Forza GT
Hammer Black Widow Gold
DV8 Vandal
DV8 Creed Rebellion

I don't really care where I bowl in the line up, and I have bowled all positions at one time or another. I'm just ready to bowl when it is my turn. It is league, so not really any pressure most of the time.

Unless there are man points involved, it shouldn't really matter. If it is a close game, everyone needs to step up. If it does come down to the last bowlers, then I suppose you should have your best pressure bowler in the anchor spot. Doesn't necessarily need to be the highest average bowler.

on 3 and 4 man teams I don't care where I throw.  on 5 man teams I just don't want to be 3rd.  3rd always feels weird to me.

And I'm the complete opposite.

3rd is the pivot guy and my preferred place. Good spare shooting, but also can get a read off the lane from the first two bowlers, plus help set up the setup guy who sets up the anchor.

Outside of 3rd, I'd also bowl 4th. I can help set up the anchor who more times than not throws a similar line as me, so I can give him a good look as well. 1st is the challenge for me, as it would be the hardest for me to be. For that I'd need to be more confident and convicted in my line on the fresh, which is something I need to work on.

In the past, I've usually been anchor.  On my 5 person team now, I'm third.  Anchor is fun because you are like Michael Jordan with the game in your hands.  I love the pressure.  Makes bowling feel more like a sport and not an activity that goes hand-in-hand with eating fatty foods and drink 2-3 pitchers of cheap beer.  HOWEVER!

The issue I had with anchor is that you are last to leave.  By the time you finish your last shot, half your team is out the door already.  Sometimes you are stuck doing the scoring.  Then you have to chase down the other team for their signature.  Sometimes you also have to clean the mess your team made and throw out the trash.

So I like being in the middle.  You get to see what the lanes are like before throwing a single ball and you don't have to throw away the trash ahah!

Third as I am the eyes of my team.  When moving pairs, my job is to interpret what the 2 bowlers in front of me see, make an adjustment and then relay that info to the bottom 2.

Agreed completely.

But to play Devil's Advocate, there are those who believe that those in the 3rd spot are there so that the other 4 can protect what they could see as the weakest bowler on the team.

Glad that we all know a lot of good bowlers in that spot that puts an end to that ********. ;)

I normally bowl in the anchor position in the 2 leagues I bowl in, I enjoy rolling last and don't mind the pressure.

Have been anchor for as long as I can remember, but have always wanted to bowl leadoff just never gotten the opportunity. I do like that everyone depends on me,but it rarely comes down to that most times anyhow. I also think getting the team off to quick start would be nice.
