Is anyone else dreading the start of leagues?
« on: August 01, 2019, 07:02:10 AM »
My Wed nite league starts Aug 22nd ...... The LAST thing I want to do in August is be inside a bowling alley.  34 weeks -- UGH.  After 30 years of this stuff, I'm almost ready to hang it up.  The issue is, once it gets cold, dark and nasty outside I will miss it.

Why can leagues start when we roll the clocks back and end when we roll them forward -- that would be perfect.  8)

Being ready isn't getting up from your table on the concourse when it's your turn.  Being ready is greeting your teammate as they come off the approach.

I agree.  But at this point I would just settle for people just getting up when it is their turn.  It is becoming quite an epidemic at my bowling center.

Yep. I’m at the ball return before the arrows hit my name, I’m there to bowl, not jerk off.

I don't dread it at all. But at the moment I am only full time in 1 league, I will sub in a few others. With my work schedule, I have to get up at 4:30am, so I wont bowl in any leagues that finish after 10:30pm. I am also at the point where I would rather bowl on a sport condition league instead of the house shot and be challenged instead of it being  a carry contest. Anyways let the season begin, oh wait, I did bowl all summer in a trio league. I am ready to go.

You know, I just found out that a center in town is offering a scratch sport league. Spoke with my wife, and got the OK to shoe up. Honestly, this is the only way I'd consider bowling league. I need to get back into bowling shape, and a sport shot is perfect. Now it's motivation to hit the gym and really assess arsenal choices.

I love having to think. :)

I don't dread the bowling part.

I do dread dealing with people on the league who forget their primary task is to bowl when it is their turn.  It is pretty simple.  When your name comes up, get up and bowl.  Your teammates, food, drinks, and phone will be waiting for you when you get done with your frame.  Bowling wouldn't take 3 hours if people are ready to go when it is their turn.

My sport league is the 2nd league of the night; following a womens league.  The ladies in this league have 2 or 3 teams that never finish on-time unless they are short a bowler or 2.  God help us if 2 of those teams are facing each other; we could start an hour late.

Our proprietor, to his credit, has done everything in his power to speed them and us up such that we are starting and finishing on time.  his efforts actually started to make a difference in the women finishing their league on time last year; so I hope it continues to improve.

I couldn't help notice that many of you mentioned being excited about an upcoming sport shot league.  I was jealous.
Just picked up the fall league flyer from one of our two centers and guess what?  This fall a trios sport shot league will be offered on Thursday nights.
I'm in for sure; but will have to drop from one of the two THS leagues I was going to bowl in.
Keeping the THS league where our team is very competitive for a first place finish and now the sport shot league.  Life is good in the bowling world!

That's the best balance, when I was in college the local house had a sport league I did and I bowled a THS league just to get my confidence back!

Now where i'm at I bowl a league in each of the two houses closest to me, but neither are hard. Fortunately North Central Illinois to Chicago area has quite a few regular tournaments on sport patterns to get a little variety in.

Back to topic, I'm excited about league this year, had my best league year ever two years ago, got too busy in life and it showed this past year as I regressed, and now i've found myself practicing a bit this summer and really looking forward to fall leagues this year.

I am ready for league to start next month.  We finish PBA league this week and will have a 4 week layoff until fall league starts, the big upside of bowling the PBA league this summer was improving my spare shooting.

Not dreading the start of league - it's finding 2 bowlers who average around 200 so my team can fit under an 845 cap in a "highly competitive" league.  It's has not been as easy as I'd hoped it would be...

Which brings me to....if the league is being billed as "highly competitive", how do you have an 845 cap for 4? In this era of scoring, the cap's too low.

I've bowled 5 man scratch leagues where the cap was 850. It makes the league more fun AND more competitive in my opinion. I also think it's good for the future of bowling to get more of the 170-180 folks into bowling scratch.

Just my opinion...

Was this recently (last 5 years)?  Also, an 850 for 5 scratch league, on a houseshot sounds inconceivable (170 a man? doesn't sound right)....maybe you meant 1050 for 5? or 850 for 4?

No, it was 850 for 5. You could only fit one maybe 2 bowlers with a 200 average. Everyone else had to make the 850 so they would have some 130/140 bowlers. The teams that did the best seemed to be the ones with their highest bowler being a 180 guy and a couple of 160's and 170's.

Still there last time I checked. Defiantly 850 for five person teams. It was a lot of fun, but my average is too high to make a competitive team. Plus, it's a day league with mostly seniors.

I think Dublin bowl still has their 990 scratch league, known as the Dublin Majors. It's five per team and it's probably the biggest league for that house.

850 for five is a hard one to make, unless the average age is 65+. Then it becomes a lot easier. The one season I bowled it, if you averaged 200 or more, everyone seemed to wish you would just go away. Even your own team.

Our Scratch Trio league is capped down to 625 this year. The surfaces are wearing out and taking their toll even on THS averages. Second shift when we bowl can be a real adventure.

But I agree the capped scratch format is great for bowling, especially when it forces you to bring in lower average folks. In many cases they work harder to get better.
