Is anyone else dreading the start of leagues?
« on: August 01, 2019, 07:02:10 AM »
My Wed nite league starts Aug 22nd ...... The LAST thing I want to do in August is be inside a bowling alley.  34 weeks -- UGH.  After 30 years of this stuff, I'm almost ready to hang it up.  The issue is, once it gets cold, dark and nasty outside I will miss it.

Why can leagues start when we roll the clocks back and end when we roll them forward -- that would be perfect.  8)

I've bowled 5 man scratch leagues where the cap was 850. It makes the league more fun AND more competitive in my opinion. I also think it's good for the future of bowling to get more of the 170-180 folks into bowling scratch.

Just my opinion...

Our Scratch Trio league is capped down to 625 this year. The surfaces are wearing out and taking their toll even on THS averages. Second shift when we bowl can be a real adventure.

But I agree the capped scratch format is great for bowling, especially when it forces you to bring in lower average folks. In many cases they work harder to get better.

The only scratch league in my area is a 5 man one with a 1050 cap. Some things have happened in recent years and the house isn't as high scoring as it once was (still the highest scoring house in the area though). The league has adopted a draft, and just to get some balance in it there is always some nice rotations of new bowlers joining.

At the end of last season I had pretty much decided I was done. After battling wrist issues for the last two years and bowling in a league that started at 7:30 and got done around 10:20 I felt worn down. I have bowled in leagues for 46 years, since I was 15 and loved every minute of it. As soon as league night was over I couldn't wait until next week. But, this past year had taken it's toll. On the final night of our league tournament I tried an older 14lb ball and boy what a difference. Practiced a couple of times and decided to make a bold change. I sold every 15lb ball I had and bought two new 14s and now have a decent 3 ball arsenal. I can't wait for league to start. They are going to discuss an earlier start time at our meeting but I'm not hopeful about having that happen and getting done earlier. Plus, we had a helluva time having 5 bowlers every week. That has to change or I'll be bowling on a different team next year.

I wish our league was shorter.  Right now it is 37 weeks at 35 bucks a week.  It is a super fun league and we appear to be growing again about being down for the last 10 years or so, but it can be a grind at times.  Right now we are at 815 for 4 so it is always a challenge to get the right mix of people to be successful.   But as the last remaining scratch league within a 30 min drive, hopefully, we can keep it going.

That would be the 21st when your league starts. We start the same night for 33 weeks!

We start August 21st for 37 weeks, with two weeks off for the holidays (Xmas/New Years).  Let's get it on!

We are 1/3 of the way through our season and I'm jumping ship at the end of August.  Our high school season matches (I'm a coach) is at the same time as my league nights, so I will be missing 3 months of bowling that I would have to pay for and have a sub bowl for free. In mid-November, I'm getting a work promotion, so I don't know what my schedule will be, so I found a replacement, and I'm out.

I really haven't been having much fun due to recovering from hand surgery, and team mates showing up late all the time (for stupid reasons) and dragging *ss all night, holding everyone up and finishing late.  I need a break, and when everything settles down, maybe I can join another league.
