Title: Is this just a rare freak occurance?
Post by: bcw1969 on April 23, 2007, 09:42:39 AM
This guy in my tuesday night mixed league( we didn't bowl his team), but he came into last week with a 178 avg with 87 games bowled for the season, and he bowled a 798 series(268-276-254) . Back when i was averaging in the 170's years ago I never got close to that kinda series, my high was in the 690's when i had that avg. Now that  I am at 200 even my high is only around 750. This guy came into last week with only 21 200's in 87 games and only 11 series 550+ for the season and rips off a 798--needless to say he now has the high handicap series of 936. His team is only in the middle of the pack for the 2nd half of our season, so it's not much of a threat to my team who is in the top 5, and a sandbagger wouldn't suprise me in our league , there seems to be too many of them as it is, but I WAS wondering how often do you see a person with an average that low bowl a series that high?  His entering average is listed at 170--I guess he really improved these past few months. I'd have to bowl an 856 tomorrow night to get high handicap series, I guess I won't win that one :-)

It doesn't sound like its unsual in your league even you rolled 180 pins higher than your average that is quite a difference

I saw a 140's bowler roll a 650 series against us this year. Things can happen. Maybe he had a new bowling ball that works for him; maybe he just had a lesson or two, maybe he just got extremely lucky. It happens. That doesn't make him cheater. The fact that he was bowling 200 games a between a fifth and a quarter of the time seems to me to say he does have some ability. Most likely he doesn't adjust well, or has problems with spares. Perhaps the shot was just right for him that night. You never know. Now...if he had only a handful of two hundred games, yet seemed to be a really good spare shooter, then I would have a question or two. Usually....sandbaggers give themselves away with their spare shooting.

I was averaging in the 170's when I shot my 745. It's about getting the breaks.

I had a teammate last year who was averaging in the low 160s & on the last night of league, he reeled off a 751. We still finished in the bottom half, it was just one of those nights. Had been bowling with him for 2 years, he had never had a 700 & had broken 600, maybe 2-3 times. He was just more consistent & the pins were falling that night.

As the others have said, it's about getting breaks.  Sometimes the stars just line up the right way.  He may have a good set next week as he rides his streak or he may collapse as he tries to do it again, but I doubt he'll throw another 798 in 10 more years of averaging 170.

Hey, a year or so back I saw a 171 avg bowler get a ball drilled hot off the press and go 300-279-214(793), then the next night come in and go 811 but I wasn't there for the individual scores.  Even a blind squirrel will find a nut someday.  I thought it was pretty amazing, especially since this guy had like 14mph ball speed and less than average revolutions.  That ball in that center gave him maximum tug room and never left the back row when I saw him throw it.

I was averaging 178 when shot my 819.  It was a mixed league on Fridays so my average was around 10-15 pins lower than the commercial league.  Once in a lifetime night but it happens.

I remember when a budy of mine hit an 800 series...funny thing was he did it before ever hitting a 700 series, so it does happen.

Probabl;y just chalk it up to the rare "untouchable" night. Saw a guy with a 188 average that had never had an award score go 229-299-300=828 about 10yrs ago. He has not rolled an award score since, and still averages in the 190's.

The guy from Xenia,OH that shot 899 back in the late 90's had a 186 average and had just shot his first 700 the week prior to reeling off the front 35 in league. To make it better, he was using house shoes with velcro straps and palming a used ball that he just put his fingers in (old Crush/R).

To think this guy was the state record holder for Ohio for about 7-8 years and hasn't shot an honor score since, is mind-boggling.
