Its called a brooklyn but why?
« on: December 14, 2006, 09:46:01 PM »
I just have a quick question...I know that when you hit the other side of the pocket as a righty...they call it a "Brooklyn", but I never knew why??? Can somebody shed some light? and is there any other terms? I know its called a messenger when you hit a strike when you send the seven pin across the lane hitting the 10 pin, is there any other?

If you can't fix your game, then I suggest beating it with a HAMMER!!!

I heard that it's called a Brooklyn (for a righty) simply because it crosses over (the river like in NY going from NJ into Brooklyn) and that for a lefty it's called a Jersey for the same reason but in the opposite direction.

I thought a Brooklyn for a righty was a strike in the 1 - 2, and a Brooklyn for a lefty was a strike in the 1 - 3.  I also think that it can be called a Jersey only if the Brooklyn is made while in Brooklyn.

On your 'lucky strike'-

In Aus it's a back door strike, very much along the whole Greek theme I guess...

I'm from Long Island and since we are on the other side of the Hudson we call the 1-2 pocket strikes "Jersey's" strikes.

Well, the question has been answered, but I pose another one.

I work in a bowling center and I always hear people that obviously don't bowl much at all call a crossover strike a brooklyn strike.  How do all these people know the term "Brooklyn?"  Always amazes me, because it's quite often that this happens.

My best friend (native of Brooklyn, NY) will give me an ICY stare and say "It's Jersey, NOT Brooklyn" if I should call one of her crossover strikes a Brooklyn

Some of it must depend on what part of the country you're from (I hear Brooklyn all the time in Detroit bowling leagues).

They call it that because they believe the world revolves around NYC or NJ. Just ask em!

If the world revolves around Jersey we are in trouble.

We used to call it "jersey" and i'm from south jersey. Now i just call it Luck, go figure.

No offense to the peeps on here from Brooklyn, but i always thought it was like being on the wrong side of the tracks.  As in, sompeplace u DONT want to be, or if u have to be there, dont stay long.

Only New Yorkers call it Jersey.  So I say by the majority rules decision....it's a "brooklyn".
